Proton although a Malaysian brand is now 50% chinese owned so it will have all chinese parts now. The last proton cars we saw in mid-2000s were of the old Proton which used mitsubishi parts. Chinese cars have a long way to go in proving themselves to be rivals of Japanese or Korean cars, and when they charge irrational prices just to fit in between prices of existing manufacturers I think they are setting themselves up for failure.
Proton, Changan, Geely have already entered the Pakistani market in early 2000s and then fled the market later on when sales took a dip. Hyundai/Kia did the same thing but this time their sales volumes (especially Kia) suggest that they are here to stay.
Also, choice of car matters on many factors as well such as whether it's the first car or fourth car, mechanical inclination of the owner, reliability, etc. Personally, if I had to buy a first car from my life's savings without any knowledge of cars, then I'd go for Cultus in that price range above all others. If it was maybe a second or third or fourth car, I'd consider Picanto as well. Proton, MG, Changan, Geely and anything else I'd keep on my watch-list for a few years till sufficient reviews on reliability, parts, resale, etc. are available.
