Reasons to buy Mitsubishi Lancer GLx in 2016

Mechanical parts for the lancer are now easily available in pindi, new one's from saddar and specially the kabli ones in khu that are not even expensive, if you have a good mechanic then maintaining it is no longer a hassle. Engines / transmissions / suspension etc everything is readily availbe

The best thing about the lancer have been the CVT transmission which has been available in it while not being in the other cars in this segment, properly maintaining it gives the best economy and drive which the dino era automatics can't ever match. This is the reason almost all new passenger cars are CVT, its superior in every way and all it requires is proper care / regular CVT oil changes at scheduled intervals.

All my friends who have this car are all praise for it, I tried finding a clean one and have been unsuccessful since cheaper ones are very badly abused and those who have good ones have no reason to sell such a good car in this price range.

I have driven/kept Lancer since 2005 till I sold it in 2016. (2 different models)
And It is the most comfortable drive I have experienced in the sedan category. More than the Civic.

The cvt is all right for normal city driving but cannot sustain a high speed highway run. To all owners of CVT lancers be careful do not I repeat do not go WOT on the motorway expecting your transmission will survive it. The CVT in the Lancers like any transmission is not bullet proof. With the age of the japanese imports and mileage they reach here with the CVT is already beyond it's expected age. The CVT also needs genuine mitsubishi SP ATF3 fluid which costs 1400rs per litre here. A proper flush will need 10 litres worth of oil. But once you change it the life on it is 40k km's. If you want to go with a cheaper alternative go with ZIC ATF XP3 oil only but be sure to manage your change interval at 10-15k km's because I suffered a transmission failure with that oil at 20k km's and knowing a top dealer and ZIC since it's early time in market I can tell you ZIC is not anymore what it was pumped up to be so I would not put my trust in it for long intervals. The disadvantage of CVT is once it breaks expect to replace it. With the 4 speed auto the benefit is its tried and tested and is practically unbreakable and repairable too with the right mechanics.

And I have not been a fan of mileage because I don't really care how much it costs. I've been checking calculating lately and my 1500cc jdm lancer 10 litres of hi octane and remaining normal altron is giving me 9.7km/l on city driving. 9.3km/l with hard driving. My driving is very spirited, someone with a light foot in this manner can easily touch 10km/l. I know because once I did touch that, but I am not that patient.

Compare that to the 1.6 corolla this model and the one before it and you will understand the mileage isn't really all that bad at all for such a old car.

The local ones launched by dewan had CVT in the 1.6 only, the 1.3 were simple auto. The JDM's being imported later then 2006 are mostly CVT, the stick has P R N D S etc instead of P R N D 3 2 1

Btw thanks to the availability and prices of complete front cuts, even converting a manual to auto and vice versa or from normal auto to CVT is no longer a problem. Lancer has so many option of engines and transmissions available that one can get any setup as per liking, if I get a change i'll try swapping in a 2 liter or above engine with the best tranny available for myself one day hopefully A friend got a similar setup in his nissan sunny and that ride is SWEET.

The mechanic I visit sits in chah sultan, I don't think you'll need any more info once you get his complete opinion on the car but if there is any you can ping me here. His contact is Yousaf 0333-5149239

Is chah sultan in rwp/isb or Lahore? :s I have been getting offers on my car but I won't be selling it anytime soon. I just overhauled the complete suspension, new tires, the day the engine dies or starts needing an overhaul I will myself go for a swap I do dream about a auto to manual swap but I have heard it is plagued by problems.

All transmissions deserve genuine / correct fluids, CVT one's just have shorter drain intervals. If CVTs had an inherent design issue then all the JDM's would have been grounded after motorway runs

I also have my doubts on how good ZIC's transmissions oils are, and going for cheaper fluids for any of the car's components ain't a good idea. A good fluid makes a big difference and it pays off

Dude the Lancer CVT has had massive failure rates. You have to understand this CVT was from the beginning of the CVT era. Has been there since 2000(lancer cedia), this puts it earlier date than even Honda's variomatic cvt which as you know also suffered from high failure rates. Trinituner and the internet is filled with stories, the only reason I know is mine failed too and I could find the same symptoms across the internet. I just can't pronounce the mileage here but let me assure you the mileage was extreme so I cannot fault it. Highway runs are fine but I am talking about WOT runs on the motorway for extremely long periods of time. CVT's in the new lancer actually have thermal overload protection and the warning etc. is fired on the information display. Russian forums are filled with these CVT's failures and there are kits being sold there to refurbish them. When I went to bilal gunj to get my tranny replaced the guy knew everything about the failures, the guy I got it repaired from even it wasn't his first case. I met someone in Lahore who had a pristine car same era as mine, he even admitted that he later found out from the Lancer dealer here that the tranny on the car had been replaced ordered anew from Japan. In almost all cases you will hear the steel belt on these breaking. I believe two factors are clear on this, improper flushing with improper oil and the heat generated by a CVT at 100% load is difficult to sustain for long intervals.

The stories of honda city's vario being a "failure" and "problematic" transmission are much more common, the reason not having much to do with the actual product here rather being given in a market which wasn't ready to maintain it

I agree with you. There's no inherent design problem. I have a 2005 1.6 GLX CVT and it runs better than any new 2017 local car.

Main issue is that people don't read the owner's manual and don't use genuine products. I had a big barrel of Mitsubishi Diaqueen ATF SPIII oil imported from Dubai and flush my transmission every 40,000km. Works very well.

What you also need to realise is that it's not an F1 car. Don't put a turbo or drive it like an F1 car. It was never made to be used that way. Having said that I do love its sport mode and the rally driver in me enjoys driving it in the mountains. Excellent gearbox. It can leave cars with bigger engines in the dust if you have a good driver

I love Lancer but here are the reasons not to buy:

1. Average looking interior (and exterior as well) if you compare them with the design of Civic, Corolla and City of the same era then you ll come to the conclusion that the other companies put in so much effort into designing this vehicle. This may not be a good reason.

2. Offered engines are pathetic. 1.3 has waste spare tech like swift and liana. No MIVEC tech (Mitsubishi's VVTi). Power figures and economy figures are least impressive.

3. Have reliability issues. Throttle bodies / idling valves fail often. So does the circuit board / electronics that control temperature. Have seen lancer heating up. Automatic transmissions whether CVT or ordinary, both prone to failure.

Have had 3 in the family. Not one has ever left anyone stranded. One of the three is at 250k kms presently. So I disagree with this strongly.
