i feel the same way abotu people who buy new local cars, they are buying something which will be long gone before most beeltes. however the older corollas etc have now also got a HUGE cult following and in my personal opinion they have attained classic status liek the VW beetle.
i personally i love seeing peoples reactions when i say i have a beetle, mainly because most of them also know that i own a few mercs and they always wonder why i would buy a VW. the average pakistani, no matter how "unpar" will always want to come up and discuss the car with me when i'm in my VW and it's surprising how many people have told me that they used to own one back in the day (specially wen i stop at the pump).
at the end of the day i will agree with you, here it is just a foxy and will never be as desirable as a mustang or DB5 but that's the whole point. the VW type 1 was always meant to be a car for the masses, no luxuries, no frills, just simple motoring. Every piece on the type 1 has a purpose, nothing is there for no reason.
I can assure you that your impression of the beetle will change as soon as you get behind the wheel of a good one. i fell in love with the car when i bought one with my own money and then fixed it up with the left over cash from my salary every month (my black 68 speedster).
