***Rebuilding my VW type 182 Thing***

sadly the steering has some issues on the thing so it's been parked up outside islamabad while i source parts and get a mechanic to come over and fit all the new parts. i went on monday to start her as she's been sitting for over 2 weeks,... she started on her 3rd try,.. not bad considering it's based on 50+year old technology!

still havn't taken the stickers off,.. but have every intention on doing so VERY soon. i've had my fun with them, now time to make the car more subtle.

Spent the entire day yesterday tightening various bolts on the thing, changed over to Bosch wires, new pulley belt, fit an accelerator spring, tightened the steering box, etc,..

She's feeling allot better now, next step us to check steering fluid, transmission fluid etc,...

Do note that no matter what anyone tells you, you must ONLY use 90 weight fluid in both the steering and gearbox.

sourced a type 3 liscence plate light, got it painted in matte black and it fit a treat on my thing

mumtaz found that the steering box had slightly moved from its original location,.. which probably explains why the steering suddenly became vague. turned out a few taps with a hammer and retightening fixed that problem.

removed the tank for better acces to the steering box,.. and we also decided to swap out the toyota/VW hybrid steering.

had to replace the outer bush on the arm, took this pic for refference (note the hole in the silencer)

time to take that horrible alteration job out of my VW

WOOHOO!! out she comes finally,.. now to revert to stock!

mumtaz checking the bush at the base, was finished so we replaced it before fitting the VW outer casing.

before you know it, the bush was in (see the red part). this guy was seriously fast. he even installed the other Bush at the same time (the 2 piece one). i'd forgotten about it so i didn't take a pic.

meanwhile on the other side,.. progress was slow.

people INSIST on fitting toyota parts to VWs for some reason,.. not thinking about the damage they are causing!!

eventually the guy form the other side came over to show this guy how it was done,... and clearly nothing had been done.

sadly it went dark and they were still working on it. but they eventually got it done. RESULT!!

day 2: tried various combinations of steering shafts & column housings until we found one that fits just right

when we opened the dash we found that the original mount nut on one side had snapped previously and we had to rectify this too...

inside the bearing wasn't in bad shape so we just repacked it with grease and refit it.

refit the fuel tank so that the car could go to get the dash nut removed, exhaust leak closed and the frame horn welded.

old mess of a steering shaft. somewhere out there, there is a muppet who proudly states that this is his handywork.

FINALLY!! we have a workable solution for my 182. seems there are 3 types of steering colums for type 1s and the type 18 uses a mixture of them.

as mentioned above, there was an issue with the steering mount bolts and here you can see the shortcut that we had to rectify.

mechanics off for a quick run to the welders, then lunch and friday prayers.

here you can see the wels to the frame horn, not the finest job but it'll hold.

old bolt removed, ow we can use the OEM mounts for the stering column.

hopefully today i'll fit at least one headlight (will try & wire it up to the switch on my own) and re do all the little things which have been moved around over the last few days by the mechanics.

anyone know the dimensions for the bolts which hold on the headlight rings?

well i finally did it. got both headlights on and got one working (missing a bulb for the other one). sadly the palastic lense headlights SUCK and i cannot fit the chrome rings onto the headlights,... i have a feeling i'm going to have to tear up the headlight bowls to get everything to fit correctly as i'm NOT happy with the work done by arshad (nothing new).

when will these bloody denters realize that we are paying top-dollar for top-notch work???

I hope you handed over the headlight rings to Arshad to check for fitting once he was done with the denting job? Because if not, he couldn't test fit the rings to slip on as a sleeve. But with an experience of yours, I can not imagine a situation where Arshad wasn't provided with the headlight rings. So I am assuming that he might just have been sloppy/lazy to test fit the rings.

yup, he had rings but i have a feeling he never did a test fit. it seems the headlight bowls are a mess and i'm going ot bring in a new set next time i go abroad (maybe even fenders) as the car had the front left fender rebuilt after the major crash the previous owner had. there is still much to do....

rear light opened so we can wire up everything and fit bulbs

left headlight opened an wired up (using japanese clips which lock into place)

the black clip locks onto the bulb so it wont come off while offroading or on our bad roads..

fuse box removed so we could see what all we needed (which was allot)

this is why i put the iron cross on my car, it's usually associated with Hotrod culture but still sort of ties in with the symbols on general Erwin Rommels desert campaign vehicles (and they fact that Rommel wore an iron cross medal around his neck when in uniform)

She's getting there,... almost all wires connected

added a rubber hose around the wiring loom where it goes through the body. it's too wide to have a grommet so this will be added safety in the long run

How about headers? If a custom exhaust can be made, I'm in for making one for my Bug aswell.

the good news is that today 90% of the main wiring and stuff has been done, tomorrow we'll be changing the ignition from a Toyota one to a NOS VW unit. Pending for tomorrow are a flasher unit so that my indicators work correctly, a few bulbs and wiring for my horns. Almost all work will concentrate around the steering column so we are in the home stretch.

however (note to self) i need:
1. an indicator stalk (coming form canada),
2. a set of Bosch Horns
3. base/mount for the horn button in the steering centre.
4. new front fender indicators (complete)

once i've got these sourced and fit i'm pretty much done in terms of electrics (not counting the wiper motor).

the car looked awsome tonight with EVERYTHING working, parking lights, low beams, indicators, high beams, liscenece plate lights, brake lights, oil light, generator light, speedo light (with dimmer),... seriously, you all should check out Abid ustaad next time you need some wiring done as he pulled through and finished the wiring butt saab started before he died (may he rest in peace).

romano has a guy who can make OEM style exhausts for beetles, the problem with the thing is that hte exhaust pipes exut through the rear bumper so i have very limited options.

i custom made one for my 1303 a while back (very expensive/not cost effective) and you'll have to bring the car to the fabricator (not ideal).
