Replacing rear disk brakes of 2004 Corolla with drum brakes

NOTE:Restarting this thread because the problem exists.The car even skids on braking at the speed of 30-40kmph.

I own a 2004 2.0D Saloon since 2004.Its brakes are really pathetic and are very unpredictable as is the issue with these corollas.I was advised a few months back to replace its rear disc brakes with drum brakes and then check, it will work fine.Anybody who has experienced this.I once saw this model car with rear drum brakes but I could not ask the owner about its results as car was parked and the owner/driver wasnt there.

Thats good.Which model disc brakes can fit 2004 Pakistani corolla?Can X corolla 2006 model dis brakes fit into it?And from where did you get the job done and for how much?If you can share details.

The world moves forward than why don't you? If this really works than think for replacing front ones too,early 70s cars have all drum brakes and they really perform well.Now come to life Instead of replacing disc with drums better change all front and rear suspension with Japanese parts then see your self it really works.

drum is not a solution

change your car suspension .......keep the ride hight low...dont use to much big profile .......and brakes work fine

as u drive car..susp work is required..cars height changes ..which is the main issue of locking up of brakes

IMHO 4 wheel disc brake setup without ABS and EBD is a bit dangerous.
It performs best with ABS and EBD.
Otherwise cars that have front disc and rear drum brakes with no ABS brake better.

4 wheel disc with ABS > Front disc, rear trailing drum > 4 wheel disc without ABS.

initial models of XLI's etc came with drum brakes at the rear
someone i know has one and its brakes are amazing.
else another solution is to change the brake fluid distribution T with a corolla X one

I have changed suspension also but it didnt work.And most of the parts of suspension are Japan made and then there are parts that are not available here and Thailand made parts are sold.And I do not prefer getting used parts for suspension.I changed the front shocks to KYB Japan but these shocks are giving me the strange sound which is hallmark of these cars.

please dont shoot whatever you have, why dont you have a look at a 300E W124 mercedes benz - it will stop so fiercely that you will have a headache, It has got 4 regular sized disc brakes (same as corolla). The reason it stops so quick is suspension design, the rear suspension has anti dive, antilift and anti squat setup, meaning it does not induce lift on braking. And the wheels provide traction. The ABS does not engage very often unless on ice.

The corolla brakes are ok to work with, its the lift the car faces while driving that causes stupidity. hard brakign causes rear lift and sway. adding drums will not favour you. They will be the same.

in the US all corollas from CE to S have the 1ZZFE engine with front disc and rear drums, ABS standard, they stop reasonably well.

But the suspension of Pakistani and X corolla is almost the same.Its just the worst quality of Toyota in Pakistan that is responsible for these problems.I read sometimes back that Pakistan Toyota is the worst in terms of faults in cars in the whole world.

I get it
The desigining and the engineering matter alot.
Its not only the brakes that are responsible.
Moreover I respect your opinion and appreciate every bit of knowledge that you convey in each and every post of yours.

The OP was talking about local Corolla and I shared my personal experience after driving the following cars.
The 1998 Corolla GL has excellent brakes. (Front disc & Rear drum with no ABS)
2000~08 Corolla having 4 wheels disc with No ABS will scare the **** out of you if you need to apply emergency brakes.
The current shape GLi & Altis have 4 wheel disc setup with ABS and brakes are superb.

I miss my 1990 03 door inter cooler Pajero very much,i still remember its marvelous braking and that was without ABS, more a less same can be felt in 2004~2007 Lancer here in Pakistan.Again with No ABS.

And please advise me how to improve my 2004 Corolla 2.0D Saloon brakes.My car even skids sometimes with braking at speeds of 30-40kmph.I am very much annoyed.And the only solution in my opinion is to change its rear disc brakes to drum brakes.Your opinion needed in this regard.

Which Tire size are you using and which tires ? how old are your tires

Tires are Yokohama A Drive 195/70/R14 just 24000km driven.

I have cut my rear springs and the height of my XLI 06 from the rear is lowered, and the brakes are good enough, as i apply brake the uplift from the lowered rear is then equal to the front of the suspension, soo tyres have traction, further i have to improve more, Some where i have seen that distrubtion T of the fluid by changing it also helps, i want som advice regarding that T.
