Totally agree...no matter how hard you try, junk would remain junk.

Volkswagens on the other hand are precious metal. They appreciate with age.

I am not sure what car you drive but if it is not a Volkswagen I am pretty sure it won't be around when this odd shaped car would still be turning heads.

I would only partially agree with you re. show case restorations comment. Some restorations do merit a show case status due to the nature of the project, however most enthusiasts enjoy driving their restored classics - from daily drivers to weekend grocery getters. I try not to drive mine in rain if I can help it but I just did a 1600 km trip in my 1960 beetle, part of it in rain. Its appreciating the value of my own hard work and the love for the car that I spent a couple of hours cleaning, washing, drying and waxing the car after the trip..ready for a new challenge!

I am glad you have listed your favourite classic cars here..jaguar, Mercedes, Cadillacs etc...I am sure you are the proud owner of at least one of these gems.

VW's are indeed great cars in more ways than one. I drove a 2010 Golf and boy! did that car ever rip some asphalt! However there is something about the odd and ugly shape of the beetle. If it had not been the case VW would not have re-introduced the concept one new beetle drawing on the same odd shaped design that won the hearts of 21 millions buyers from 1938 to almost 2003 around the globe, making it the longest running and most manufactured car of a single design anywhere in the world... VW is relaunching the new beetle with a design that resembles the old beetle even more.

There has to be something about this car! We don't know what but we love it. You don't and I am not surprised. You have more expensive taste in classic cars but then there is no way you should look down on our choice of classics.

It is indeed an open forum but for everyone's sake lets keep our conversations civil. I for one, turn to these forums as a way of relaxing and I am sure you do too. Lets not spoil anyone's fun.

No body is anti-you. Comments on ones religion and political views usually get the strongest reactions / comments. With a VW classic car owner, include his beloved VW to the list. I suggest you stick around and keep checking the threads posted by VW owners. You may begin to appreciate the challenges faced by them when restoring the 'pieces of junk' to their former glory. I don't mean to try and convert you...but if you do, I won't be surprised.

@murtaza_murti Whats the hold up man? Long time no update? Are you sure that your are still interested in completing the project? I'm sure you are, but then why not just do it?

Oh no, never ever how can I ever leave my Bug as it is. The actual hold up is me, the thing is that I've been really busy with my classes that I haven't got any time for the Bug. However, I did get all the remaining stuff that was required and gave them to my mechanic. Now, I am looking for tires would get them by early next week. I got the OEM steelies repainted to matte black.

Now, after getting the tires I would have to get OEM wheel nuts and a few horse shoe bracket bolts then the suspension would go on, then the alignment, wheel balancing. After all of that, it'll be ready for the paintjob.

BTW, I wanted to ask a question from a fellow Vdubber. My current steelies have no inflation valves, should I get valves or tire tubes? Uncle Fredrick (my mechanic) said that you should get tire tubes instead.

Update:

Bought a set of four Euro Star 175/65/R15, they came from a Honda City that had just arrived from the dealership. Got three valves and one tire tube because on of the rims had a small dent and was leaking air.

Have to get OEM lug nuts tomorrow.

you are installing tubeless type radial ply tires - they are different than the original nylon ply tube type tyres your car originally had. It if were my car I would remove the tyres from the rims and buff them clean internally, paint them too, install some tire valves with sealant and seal the rim edge with proper tyre mount grease or some liquid soap. - not engine oil.

No, I've only added a tube in one of the tires because the rim had a small dent and was leaking air. The rims were buffed properly before they were placed on the tires and I got them painted matte before getting the tires. Yes, the tire valves were installed with a grey color sealant.

I'll have to ask my mechanic about the alignment and wheel balancing, I know not every Tom, Dick and Harry can align a Beetle.

I know it's been a long time since I've updated this thread. The workshop being quite far from where I live, it is hard for me to visit it every other day. And plus, I don't get much time due to my classes, stuff at home etc etc. Uncle Harry (the painter) has gotten the under carriage and the under sides of the fenders scraped and painted, the engine bay has been primered and is ready for the first base coat which will be spray on hopefully by tomorrow.

Filling has been filled wherever it was required, the right hand side and the front hood is left.

Well, enough of me writing. Here are some pictures:

The as good as new Euro Star 175/65/R15's I got a while back and I got the OEM rims painted aswell. Sorry for the dirt on them.
