^^
That's a nice write-up. Easy to understand.......
My comments for this method....(refer to the link for numbering as per diagram and discussion)
--- Personally, I prefer the 'kit' (which we poor folks have to make ourselves) to be a bit different.
Pieces numbers 1, 2 and 3 can be one piece. It is a bit more difficult to stick onto the front firewall and fenders' inner but I figure it is not removed many times and if removed can be removed and replaced in one go.
Piece number 7 should be in three pieces. The cut should be at the base of the side of the center tunnel. My reason being that when one wants to work on the shifter or change the accelerator wire, we can easily remove the center piece and not disturb the whole setup. Even if this is out, one can still drive the car and have a front passenger sitting comfortably.
--- Now some input on the suggested procedure....
Clean up the area thoroughly and paint any bare or rusted areas after suitable priming. Leave to dry overnight at least.

No need to remove shifter. Cut a round hole to accommodate the shifter rod and round base only. For accessing the two bolts later, you will need to remove the center carpet piece.
Do NOT play with the shifter. If dismantled it may be a PITA to reinstall as the adjustment goes out.
Your bug does not have original heater channels and does not have (as far as I can remember) any metal strips to form a lip to hold the carpet edges. Under this condition, you may either paste the edges to the sills or may get lips welded on or screw a pair of metal (aluminum/SS/painted metal) strips onto the edges.
Any questions or comments, pl ask.....
