Mainly because windscreen rubbers are not available just yet. Local ones don't fit very well. You're right, there's bound to be rust. The other issue is the risk that the screen may crack during removal, a risk on a veh that is almost half a century old!! They will need to be polished once the resto' is nearing completion and the thot of getting that done is daunting enough!

Try to find them in the USA. The quality is very good and the price half than UK. You can ask Nasir Sheikh in Islamabad he may have but his prices are expensive. If you leave rust now it will break bubbles in your new paint. You can park car in sun then remove rubber easily after 15 minut No chance to break. Screen breaking is not a worry as it is so easy with VW. Even if you break then new ones are sold by Mokeem auto in Pindi. By parking in sun you can put old rubber back too. Maybe it will not fit nice and tight but will be good till you find new one.

the original putty that is applied in such screen installations is actually plumbers putty - I have installed a few old model mercedes benz screens and they are also in the same league as this.

firstly - yes the rubbers need to be replaced with new.

secondly a good cleaning and priming of the pinch welds of the screen frame and then spending some quality juvenile time rolling up putty and sticking it on the body and then installing and pulling the install ropes would make quick work.

Thankyou for your input gentlemen. As the rest of the work progresses, am hoping this issue will be sorted as yes, there s definitely rust and worse behind those perished rubber surrounds. Am holding out for the "genuine" items which can accommodate the chrome inserts. The currrent ones are definitely past it!! Some photos to illustrate this are attached along with the work so far. Surprisingly this was not an issue in the red '69 bec of it having been kept in a much more favourable climate all it's life.

You just need the deluxe seals. They can either be from Wolfsburgwest or Westcoast Metric. Both of them are good manufacturers and their seals are of good quality.

i certainly hope so!! The front suspension comes off as a complete unit and parts will be replaced, cleaned and the whole assy painted before refitting.
After some of the behemoths I have to deal with, this is a sweet little thing to manage

Waiting for details on it. I know the engine is being overhauled, but work has slowed done. Pesse provide the latest info and completion date. Looking forward to it being on the road again.
