often times I see and hear people talk about installing a fatter tyre for added grip in GS-150. in my humble opinion, the rationale is purely Homepathic in nature where result the result is based on expectation rather real/quantifiable evidence. a user installs a fatter tyre expecting that it would increase his braking ability and instantly the increase in braking ability is felt because of that strong expectation.
what people do not consider about installing fatter tyres:
- loss of acceleration
- loss of fuel average
- change in gearing ratio
- increase in engine load due the change in gearing ratio
- increase in gear load on Clutch plates due to change in gearing ratio
in short: you will wear out your engine sooner.
I am sure somebody would probably stand up and say that he/she has seen people riding bikes with fatter tyres to no ill-effect, well....I would humbly state "Its your bike, who am I to stop ya from riding into the sunset for a happy ever-after?"
Still if you insist, this is how I would recommend:
get a wider rim instead of a fatter tyre, see if it helps. you might consider HONDA Deluxe's rim which is quiet wider then GS-150's.
if that didn't tickle your fancy, how about installing a smaller rim. e.g., installing a 17inch Rim then install a fatter tyre. a bit of calculation may be required (easily available online) to ensure that your stock gearing ratio remains the same. this way, your gearing ratio will not change by much (again, ensure via online gearing ratio calculators).
Similarly, the increase weight of the rubber (fatter tyre) will be offset by the decrease in overall circumference of the tyre (smaller diameter of the tyre). hence, there will be no additional load on your bike's engine/clutch plates. (READ: Rotational Inertia)
Bottom Line: any modification when done right is usually an expensive and hectic ordeal. now you should know why Homeopathic solutions are so inexpensive and usually require administration of a few sugar coated (pardon the pun, they are literally sugar coated) pills or a few drops that cure everything where the conventional medicine succumbed to total failure. lols!
Regards.
