Technically, I wouldn't consider cars from the '80s to the '90s as oldies - but that's just me. The power that they put out was essentially the same as today's cars. The few differences that are rather marked are that the levels of body stiffness and safety are different, there's an inclusion of good ABS and traction control systems, better emission controls (now now, let's be reasonable boys :D) and luxuries.
I personally would take the body stiffness and the safety of ABS, because I know I'm not a superhuman. As fas as luxury is concerned, give me air conditioning and power steering and I'm happy. As for the top speed issue, it's more to do with drag and power than weight. That's why new cars aren't much better than old ones.
