I guess EVs will not come close to ICE in utility until filling them is as convenient as filling fuel, i.e. stop at a pump, and in 2-3 minutes the tank/batterys are full, and buy an extra can and fill it with fuel to carry around if needed. Research in this direction is going on, and I remember reading some leaps made with the objective of fully charging an EV in under 3 minutes, not sure if/when this'll start reaching EVs on the roads.
Until then, I like the idea of range-extender engines in EVs, the car doesn't get out of operation if there is no electricity or no time to charge. It has some limitations, but at this time and state of technology, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
