Guys does throttle body need regular cleaning because today one of official dealership asked me to get throttle body cleaned.my car is just 20000km driven and i have never been asked to get throttle body cleaned by one one in my earlier cars .....It is corolla 2009 and i had no issues just went for oil change and routine tuning at 20000 km..........i thought throttle body needs cleaning at least after 50000 km......They charged me 1200 for 30 minute job .....

i don't think so throttle body needs service that quickly unless you are facing any problem
try to visit other dealerships for opinions
may be they are trying to make your pockets empty for no reason

yes u need to clean it, or get tools open it ur self, get an WD40 spray ,or an carborator cleaner, and clean it all the way, u car will rev a little more in idle like 1.1 will go to 1.3 , not always ,sometimes,, i did it 3 days ago my self, y give 1200 , just giving it a little spraying puffs will do it also ,just open that aircleaner and do it,
but will make ur oil dirty, recommended when u change oil do it,a day before,

throttle body cleaning depends on the carbon amount in the throttle body,carbon & /dust depends on the type of atmosphere u drive the car in,at times the service needs to be done sooner as times later,nothing to worry about

as mentioned by jz, TB should be serviced because carbon is accumulated in it over time. I think 1200 is just too much for this job as it is not that hard. you can find many videos on the net for TB service. If you have the right tools it will not take more than an hour. 2ndly don't use WD40 for TB cleaning purpose. you can use carb cleaner or TB cleaner for this purpose.

you can clean it without removing. Just disconnect the air cleaner hose, spray some TB cleaner in and whip it with a cloth or tooth brush. You can also clean it after removing.

Most of the things which the dealership workshop do are not that hard. at 10k kms they serviced the brake pads and it was hardly one hour job if done as a DIY and they charged 600 for that :(.

BTW from which Toyota Dealership you maintain your car?

Dear Just sharing my personal experience. Do not get you car ruined by these company mechanics. You do not need to adjust anything at least at least till 50,000km. All these tapit adjustments and throttle body services are ways to pick your pockets. Only exception is that if you feel that car has been used under very severe conditions and it is required. The guys working at 3S dealers are mostly dumb and damn care about your vehicle. If you go for throttle body or tapit service/ adjustment you will end up with fluctuating RPM and poor economy.

The Service Maintenance Schedule mentioned in the Owners Manual should be followed but if you have some sincere workmen deployed for your vehicle, which are hard to find in PK. Otherwise gari ka kaam tamam kernay ka mahir hain ye 3S dealers.

Firstly thanks to you(for sharing info) i was able to get cover of ecu from lahore for 500 from dealership
I went to toyota airport its a sister dealership of walton motors...he showed me TB it was black but i donot think it can be that bad in just 19000km moreover i had no complain regarding pickup and consumption....they were doing tuning and said TB should be checked i have no probelm if they do it in reasonable amount..it was very simple stuff thats what has shocked me that they charged too much...They charged 12000 for cleaning service and also 300 for spray of some sort for cleaning it ...........So in total it was 1500 rupees JOB and yes its imp to mention how they trapped me they said sir you have come for oil chnage but its time for engine tunning of 20 000km and we are offering it free ...When we do tunnning we will also check TB and i said ok do it ....once they had opened it i had not many options to say NO to their recommended service (so free engine tuning costed me 1500:))....From now on i will get atleast TB cleaned from outside not from these looters .....I live in DHA lahore and car is mostly driven here except for few occasions ......From this estimate it looks any one living in village should get TB cleaned every time with oil change

No problem bro! I am glad you got the ECU cover. TB does not need to be serviced that often. and moreover we can do DIY to clean it. and also removing it is not a big deal just be careful that no wires get damaged and there is screw which is sealed, it should not be touched. Otherwise its a very simple job.

Didn't you ask them that if I am paying 1500 then what did they do for free?

tune up my foot, I know exactly what they do inside the service bay in Pakistan. The valves cannot be adjusted on the new Z toyota engines - the buckets have no shims. You cant tune it as well - no adjustments - other than the potentiometer which replaces the oxygen sensor in Pakistan (no laws) - they dont touch that as they cant measure anything as outcome.

They just clean your engine, pour substandard oil, spray some carby cleaner in the throttle plate and away you go. The service managers there train their techs and advisors that paisa nikalwao inn se.

I had the most horrible experience when the torque convertor of an SE Saloon Auto failed (no lockup) and it was under warranty, first they tried to shoo me away saying its my fault and I tortured the transmission, When I called in the big guns and literally told them where to connect the gauge set to measure transmission pressure, connect the ECM backprobe and probe the lockup solenoid did they do some work.

The dealership did not even have a TC in house and asked me if I was happy with a used one (WTF) when I said no, they had to get an entirely new transmission installed in it, because they dont know how to repair/service or do anything to it.

Now if I had not been angry on their robbery and bad practices and had not known how to check A/T they would have made me leave with my badly operating car

200% agreed. When I went to dealership to get the RPM drop issue checked, I told the foreman during test drive that there can be problem in vacuum pipes, or the battery. He told me that there are no vacuum pipes in this engine. I was like :o. I told him how engine and brakes can operate without vacuum pipes. When we got back to workshop he pointed to the ventilation pipe (just above the air cleaner hose. this term is used in the 1nz-fe manual) and told this is the vacuum pipe. When I asked him how you change the settings, he said we cannot change them. They came fixed from japan.

I think whatever they do as tuneups, we can perform DIYs and do a lot better job.

Xulfiqar bro! I have few questions from you. I am trying to learn about the Toyota Engine specially the z gen (1nz-fe and 2nz-fe). The questions are;
1. Is the air fuel mixture fixed for these engines in the ECU? What if the mixture gets wrong and we need to fix it?
2. Recommended spark plugs for 2nz-fe are Denso KR16U-11 or NGK BKR5EYA. I am planning to install iridium plugs. the plugs which are available are Denso IK20 or NGK BKR6EIX. These plugs are colder than the recommended plugs. According to some people, both heat range plugs can be used in 2nz-fe or 1nz-fe. What do you suggest in this regard.

You are dead right about the ECU - but Indus motors being cheap used a trim pot rather than an O2 sensor to control the mixture. The trim pot should never be fiddled with unless you know what you should see as output from it (e.g. a wide band O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe) - the original spark plugs are perfect and are swapped only for extreme desert heat conditions. The funny bit is that they can reflash the ECU with new software - but they dont.

The iridium plugs are good - dont expect a power jump or anything - they would have a very long service life as compared to copper tip plugs

never go to 3S dealer ship ... they all are just rip off .... every 1 like suzuki, toyota and honda .... i got my first throttle body cleaning done after 8 years of time after driving it 102,000km when the car needed it....

I will install the iridium plugs for the long service life. The only doubt I have in my mind is the heat range. Is it right that IK16 and IK20 can be used interchangeably (or NGK's BKR5.. and BKR6.. heat range plugs). Can I use these plugs in Lahore through out the year (summers and winters).

i got heat7 iridium plugs, need to hold my gas paddle for heating it up ,in cold start , cause my car dies , and then engine is 1.3 efi,

with a very basic knowledge I would say that we should use original Air cleaner(filter) element and should keep it cleaned which will protect throttle body from dust and smoke build up. Toyota cleaned throttle body of my brother's Altis as he felt missing problem and car was not equaly responding while accelerating.the mileage is about 60 k. They told him tuning is not possible on this engine, but to my knowledge in a very disturbed condition ECU remapping can be done.

Its not easy in these new models of corolla 2009,10,11 etc to clean Throttle body. The throttle body in these models is not like previous models of corolla or honda.The throttle body in these models are same as used in toyota camry and honda accord etc. if you are advising someone to clean it by yourself then you are wrong these throttle bodies have no wire ,this throttle body controlled electricaly by ECU and it is called ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY,there are 2 WATER BY-PASS HOSES, you need to disconnect it if you opening throttle body,if you open these hoses by yourself then all your coolant fluid gets empty and start leaking by these hoses,then there is assembly connector if you never open assembly connector before then you gonna broke the clip or PIN, there are 2 bolts and 2 nuts,nuts are easy but bolts only opend by mechanic or you able if you done before..
last thing if you got CNG then must got VENTURI,at the head of throttle bod..you also have to open venturi to open throttle body,if you open by yourself then your pipe coming from air mixture and fitted into the venturi gets leaked

Best thing if you never facing any problem then you dont need to open or clean throttle body..but if you have still CHULL to clean it then just got Carb cleaner spray 250rs, dont start car just keep the key in "ON" loose your air hose pipe, from venturi and ask other person to pressing accelerator then spray into the throttle body and clean it by soft cloth brush..
