Toyota Corolla 2016 Speedometer error

i bought a brand new Corolla Altis 1.6 2016 and was delivered to me in Sept 16. during driving I observed that the speedometer was showing speed more than what it actually was. cross checked it with GPS and found an error of around 8 to 10 Km/h at a speed of 120. at higher speeds the difference was more and at lower speeds it was less. went to Toyota, they checked the speedometer with two different types of testers and found out the same error. then they tested 3 or 4 brand new corollas (GLi, ALTIS etc) and found the same error. I have been pursuing the case with them since then but have not been given any solution. Their pretext is that it has analogue speedometer and that nobody has complained except me. I have told them that I had a Civic 2005 and its speedometer was dead accurate with my GPS. they don't have an answer for this.

I request you guys to cross check your speedometers and please provide feedback so that we can collectively take up case with Toyota Indus to give us a solution.

Damn, this should be highlighted in the Toyota forum because all Toyota Cars will have the same problem. Grande has a different speedometer so maybe it does'nt have this error.

Toyota Indus sent an engineer from Lahore to meet me and to see for himself the problem. I showed him the error, he tested it with the Toyota maintenance computers and testers and he also acknowledged that there is an error. astonishingly, the same error is in every new Toyota corolla that they tested in front of me. and still they have no intention of doing anything about it.
on motorway while driving at 135 km/h as per the indicated speed, motorway police doesnot stop me because the actual speed is around 125 km/h but the speedometer shows 135.

I think you should directly email to Toyota Japan - because it seems like Toyota Indus does not care about this issue. The error is about 10% - which is way above the norm. I know its asking the obvious, but did you change the tires?

The error is there. When My Atlis Cruisetronic 2017's speedometer is on 50 kph, GPS shows 45 kph. It has been highlighted several times in the 11th Gen Corolla Thread and almost everyone has this problem.

you would be astonished to hear that Toyota Japan doesnot have a public email address on which to approach it. I wrote to Toyota US and they were kind enough to send me email of Toyota Japan. but I was disappointed to know that Toyota japan doesnot accept email from public email servers like Hotmail or yahoo etc. so I did try that but my email got bounced and I have nowhere to go

at 80 kph the difference would be of 6 and at 120 kph it would be 8 and increase as you go higher. is yours Grande, as Toyota Indus claims that this issue is not in Grande because of digital speedometer. what I suggest is that every one with this problem should go to Toyota and ask them to test their speedometer and subsequently lodge complaint with them as well as on Toyota Indus website. this way they might feel the pressure.

If you will search online you will see that many car manufacturers induce a slight error in speed being displayed. Usually the speed shown is actually more than what the car is physically doing. So if the speedo shows 120 you are probably doing 112 or 115. This is probably a safety feature or a conversion error between the sensors and it is present in almost every car. Some car makers have a small difference and some show larger differences. But it does exist and you probably should not get too worried about it.

Mine is not grande though, it is the base version of Grande i.e. Altis 1.8 CVTi Cruisetronic, so Grande and mine are 90% similar in features and they share the same speedometer cluster. And Grande doesn't have digital speedometer.
I made a video by setting my car on cruisecontrol on 60 kph. The GPS was showing 55.4 kph at that time.

That's exactly what I was talking about. do you intend to pursue it with Toyota. My Honda Civic EXi 2005 didn't have this problem. it would show speed within 2 km/h of GPS. it was dead accurate. why would Toyota induce this error, I cant find a logical reason.

i did some research and I have concluded that basically this corolla 11th generation were designed with 16inch rims. but Toyota Pakistan has fitted it with 15 inch rims and tyres. because of this the difference in speed is observed between actual and indicated speed. if you change your tyres and rims to 16 inch, the error is gone. poor show from Toyota.

Japanese, Pakistani, all of them,

I have checked with Corolla 2001, Passo 2007, Passo 2011, EK 2013, Baleno 2005,
All cars give this amount of error of around 10km/h at aprrox speed of 120,
then i thought that it might be for safety of people, i.e. if they are seeing 120 on their speedometer, then actually it should be less.

I used original speedometer readings, GPS and internal OBD reading of ECU for comparison.

I didn't find this issue with Honda Civic 2005, it was dead accurate. an error of 10 km/h at 120 for me is not a safety factor rather it is the other way around. on motorways I over speed because to get to 120 I sometimes touch 140 on the speedometer which is more risky.

If a car is running on stock rims and tyres. The 8% to 10% difference in actual speed and speedometer reading is normal in almost all brands, whether they are JDM or local assembled.

well you have the option of setting cruise at 120 on speedo than increasing speed through cruise control stalk till it is 120 on gps.

for unconcerned population it is a safety factor.

for the other circumstances such as curves, traffic and bad weather, well speed limit is just a guideline and one must drive on a safe speed appropriate for conditions.

Corolla has this problem, even my 2010 altis 1.8 used to show 120 but actually it was 108-110km/h

This changes everything. The 0-100 timings of Corolla, the RPMs that we see at 120, all would be different if the speedometer had no error.
I made a video in which I recorded 0-100 of my 1.8 CVTi. On video, I could see that I did 0-100 in around 9.5 secs. However, I also had a OBD-II scanner connected to my car and it showed 0-100 in around 10.5 secs(as it calculated without the speed error). So I guess the ECU gives the correct speed, it is the speedometers that have been given an offset.
