The car is reducing oil very frequently like every 500 km or so, i had heard it's normal for this engine to consume oil but this feels too much. It's also throwing some white smoke and has that weird smell as well.

yes...the particular engine does have more than usual oil consumption...which is considered normal for it..also acknowledged by manufacturer..

the oil sump takes around 4.25L oil....and 500ml consumption over 3000-4000 km should be normal...slightly more or less is also okay...

however...there shouldn't be any foul smell and blue/white smoke...it has a cat converter so the normal smell should be similar to that of paint or varnish...

white smoke sometimes indicates mixing of coolant in combustion chambers...plz do check that as well..

The mechanic told my friend that the engine is on it's last legs which is absurd imo and the sad thing is my friend believes the mechanic, even though i told him that oil consumption is normal. I have driven the car, it drives totally fine. The car sometimes throws smoke not all the time, and the smell is like those old cars which throw clouds of smoke, only difference is the smoke is less. Another thing a ustaad said is that the car has 300k+ on the odo because it's reducing oil and throwing smoke. In reality it has 120k.

considering 120k....the engine is quite young and should be in its prime...

well...it depends upon the maintenance history and driving pattern...engines coupled with AT are with better health as compared to MT...its a bit difficult to redline auto box as compared to MT...

better to have a second opinion for this issue to check all vitals including compression and other tests etc

Apparently periodic maintenance was done by the previous owner and he did take care of the thing. Car was bought in feb this year. My friend is using 20w-50 shell oil. Should he go with thinner synthetic oil like 10w-50 ? Will forward what you said to him.

u said it smells like old car burning oil.
Continuous smoke means oil is passing through rings. smoke only in morning indicates leaking valve stem seals. best way to diagnose is do a compression test first.

considering engine in good nick...10W-40 wont hurt it...in fact it improves fuel consumption....check manual for appropriate oil grade..

without delay please visit some workshop which can perform compression test dry & wet readings shall not be of high difference. Any cylinder value below 140 psi at wet is BAD, engine shall be rebuild at convenience. for compression test check you tube videos

The car throws smoke and smell when it's cold and revved and also when it reaches optimum temp but only when you rev it a bit hard. Will get him to do compression test.

Rpm does increase but hesistantly. It is doing like "bhar bhar bhar"

May be fuel rail losing pressure ( faulty non return valve ) everytime you switch off engine.

Everybody says that in every corner of Pakistan you can find mechanics and cheap stuff of XLi GLI.
Is the same true for Altis 1.6 and Grande?
Altis 1.6 has 1ZR-FE engine
Grande has 1.8 2ZR-FE engine
GLi has 1.3 has 2NZ-FE engine
Which engine is best on fuel average with automatic transmission?

The 1ZR-FE and 2ZR-FE are newer engines (in Pakistan). The 2NZ-FE in the current Corolla is the same engine that was found in 2003/4 Corolla GLi 1.3 and is quite old. (Hence parts are available in abundance). Baaqi, my GLi 1.3 automatic gives 11-12 KM/L in city with a very light foot. My cousin's grande gives him 14 in city with light foot. Not sure about Altis 1.6 tho.

There are a lot of reasons for it. Maybe a faulty throttle body, maybe fuel pump is faulty. I think it'll be better if you take your car to a specialist, get it checked and then tell us what he says.

Recently i got front brakes serviced and changed brake pads. Now front tires are sticky/jam and pads are constantly rubbing rotors. Apart from rusty and jammed brake pistons nothing felt wrong. Piston keep pressing brake pads slightly. Today i myself changed both calipers with almost new (kabuli) calipers. Poured new oil and bleed all four lines. But still problem is not solved. Pistons are working fine now but not retracting.
Am i missing anything?

Pistons are working fine now but not retracting.

the piston seal is kaput
