Toyota develops next-gen Valvematic engine tech
Toyota has announced that it has developed a new variable valve lift mechanism named ‘Valvematic’, which combines the previous VVT-i technology with a new mechanism that continuously controls the intake valve lift volume.
While conventional engines control air intake using a throttle valve, Valvematic adjusts the volume of air taken in by continuously controlling the intake valve lift volume and timing of valve opening and closing. This ensures optimal performance based on the engine’s operational condition, thus helping vehicles achieve both high fuel efficiency and dynamic performance.
In the case of a new 2.0L engine developed to debut the technology, fuel efficiency is claimed to be improved by 5% to 10% (depending on driving conditions), while power levels are boosted by 10% with added responsiveness and more torque from low in the rev range.
The first cars equipped with Valve-matic should appear within the next year or two, and Toyota plans to revamp its entire petrol engine lineup by 2010.

nowadays there is no hybrid engine, there are hybrid cars, normal engine working with electric power, either in series or parallel....

the engines are more or less the same, just targeted more towards efficiency than performance

a big LOL for those who say its a copy of Honda.. let me tell you people something.. VTEC was NOT invented by Honda..
in theory VTEC was invented waaay back in 1920s.. later on in practical implementation Honda was noway near..

Valvematic is a combination of Toyota's VVTLi and BMW's Valvetronic but more advance than both..

what idiots like u don't know is that Honda has also introduced its new technology called AVTEC.. which personally to me sounds corny.. here is a lil info from net for n00bs like u who are also working as fanboys:

results of comparison between BMW, Honda and Toyota:
( A ) continuous variable valve lifting - BMW valvetronic
( B ) cam profile switching - Honda VTEC
( C ) continuous variable cam phasing - Toyota VVT-i

( B ) + ( C )=Honda iVTEC, Toyota VVTL-i
( A ) + ( C )=BMW VANOS, Honda AVTEC, Toyota Valvematic

Dont correct me if im wrong because im not!

latest trend is ( A ) + ( C ) because it reduces throttle loss, CO2 and toxic gas emission.
( B ) - out dated. that is why toyota and honda are going for AVTEC and Valvematic.

as an update toyotas VVTL-i technology failed as it was unable to keep up with the emission standards of europe n north america so they've stopped making VVTL-i engines. You can check it on wikipedia and also by checking toyota usa website u'll see they do'nt have Corolla SRX nemore which had a VVTL-i 1.8L engine producing 170bhp.
To sumup its the new or you can say improved VVTL-i engine and u cant call it a copy of hondas i-vtec as vvtl-i came before i-vtec.

i never said it was i-vtec's copy. i just answered these noobs who said that the valvmatic is "VTEC's or perhaps i-VTEC's copy". XRS discontinued? that's news! i loved the meter of the xrs. there are quite a few corolla run X's around with the the VVTL-i engines in karachi. Test drove one, i guess it did 0-100 under 8 secs

first of all, thanks alot Ateekt, secondly guys, the mighty VVTLi (or 2ZZ-GE) is not discontinued. You can still see its meaner versions in cars from Lotus. Even SuperCharged ones.

Again, the point is that the emission ratings for highperformance cars/track cars are entirely different from green cars like Corolla/Civic/RunX..

so they HAD to discontinue it in UK and in SOME states of USA.. but once under Lotus's image in UK/USA, it still is compatible..
