Worse in terms of what? different cars for different purposes. Can the Corolla tow 2800kg? Does the Corolla have GC of 225mm? Nopes. Similarly, does the Fortuner have a mono-frame body with a road-oriented suspesion? Nopes.
The Fortuner's suspesion is designed so it doesn't sag substantially when there's 280kg of load just behind the rear bumper (the tow hooks used for pulling cart trailers attach to the chassis over there), it's bound to be hard and jumpy when unladen. The Corolla is an urban mid/compact sedan.
In Australia, the more popular SUV in cities is actually the Kluger (aka Highlander) which has a car suspension...it's based on the Camry chassis. Similar to how the RAV4 shares its underpinnings with Corolla.
