Absolutely & I agree too. If I may, I would like to add a few thoughts of my own & I'll try not push my opinion too.
I've switched from a renowned AT car (2017 Altis 1.6) to 2020 Yaris Ativ MT only because of relatively newer generation NR engine offered in Pakistan so far it's proving well.
1.6 returns 8-9 kmpl fuel efficiency, Yaris returns double of that - it's based on my driving habits. I drive a bit faster than a normal traffic flow (yet obey all of the traffic rules & a heavy user of mirrors & indicators).
Totally agree that AT is less tiring but it depends. MT is painful in stop & go traffic, especially on hills where hand-brake is needed. Luckily, Yaris' hill assist eliminates that problem.
PKDM-ATs are not designed stay in a power-band. Depress the accelerator moderately and it'll downshift instantly & that's where the lag is. Please try that and you'll know it.
AT is a lot more vocal compared to actual speed output than MT. Cover 100 km on hilly and you'll start to experience loss of power/brakes. In both uphill & downhill.
To me, it's more tiring when trying to overtake vehicle ahead (especially on hills) than sitting in stop-&-go traffic. Yes, you can switch to L/S/B/Sports modes but then your economy goes down by 30%. Engine gets too vocal & engine response doesn't match up. That's why, people tend to avoid using it.
Interestingly, Toyota is ditching CVTi for direct-CVTs which, in my opinion, is to address these known behaviors. Same is the case with the Honda, that's switching to DCT.
But again, it's all about personal preferences. Trend is changing & when I'll hit 40 years age mark, I'll be more calm & would love ATs.
Peace & Eid Milad-un-Nabi mubarak ho ap ko.
