That's more like it ... For the love of my life I couldn't digest that a 1.5 would have a hard time negotiating these climb...
Yep ... driving experience in hilly areas matter a lot.. I have driven extensively in hilly areas even under snowy conditions and extreme steeps. (with tyre chains and wooden boards in the trunk) 
Building and keeping momentum is critical in hill climb... its better to go back in reverse if the momentum breaks due to traffic etc instead of pushing the engine hard to start from a standstill at a steep...though it needs a lot of practice to let the car go in reverse at hairpin loops on a steep.
