Just completed my tour to Hunza with wife and 1.5 years old kid.
Was planning for a long time to visit Hunza valley and drive on KKH all the way to Kunjerab.
Just completed my tour in last week of September. Thanks to pakwheels got so much information from here. https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/t/10-days-trip-advise-to-hunza-skardu-naltar/600875/3
Started my journey from Lahore on Sunday at 10 AM and reached Islamabad at 2 PM.
Left Islamabad at 8 AM and reached Naran at 2 PM. Stayed at PTDC Naran. Skipped lunch and hired a jeep for Rs. 2000/- and went to see lake saif uk malook. Went for a boat ride. Had pakoras there which were very mediocre. Returned back and went to PTDC restaurant which informed us that food will be served after 7 15 PM. So went back to our rooms and returned later for dinner. PTDC is expensive and not value for money. There are other very good less expensive options there but I had planned to stay there. Booked a hut which was clean, had very poor wifi, a tv and also warm water.
Left Naran next morning at 7 AM. I refueled at Balakot and did not fill petrol in Naran. Had 8 litres of petrol from burawai. Stopped at Lulusar lake. Had breakfast at Besal Moon restaurant. Pretty good place and breakfast was also fresh. Stopped at babusar top for a while. Police data entry is at babusar and chilas. Road condition from Chilas to Raikot bridge is pretty bad but manageable. After Raikot till Kunjerab the road is excellent.
Reached gilgit at 2 PM. Left gilgit at 3 and reached Duiker at 5 PM. Stayed at Fairy Land Hotel. It is newly built and seemed like a better option than Eagles Nest. Had dinner at the same hotel.
Woke up early morning for sunrise view of Rakaposhi. I was the only one to wake up early the rest of the family was fast asleep.
Checked out of the hotel at 9 AM and visited Altit fort first. I loved it. Enjoyed breakfast at Kha Basi Café which is totally run by females. Some people don’t like Altit and Baltit forts but for me it was a great experience. When you buy tickets a guide accompanies you and explains different areas of the fort. The view from top of Altit Fort is amazing and so is the history associated with it.
Afterwards visited Baltit Fort which is again amazing and also has many old artifacts belonging to that era.
Left for Passu at around 2 PM after crossing Atabad Tunnel. Did not stop for boat ride in Atabad lake. Visited Husaini Bridge which is 20 mins walk from main KKH. Initially planned to stay in Gulmit but had plenty of sunshine left so went to Passu and stayed there in Ambassador Hotel. The hotel was cleanand I guess the only decent hotel there but nothing extra ordinary. Passu has no mobile signals and no wifi and it is hell boring. Some Chinese tourists arrived that night and buffet was prepared for them. I also opted for that instead of ala carte. The food was good and after dinner went to sleep.
Next morning left at 7 AM for Kunjerab. Stopped at sost for breakfast and reached Kunjerab top at 10:15 AM. It was extremely cold there so stayed there for only 20 mins. Requested the officer posted athe check post there to let us proceed towards the gate on our car and after some requests he allowed us to go further. Asked the guards at the border to let us cross
but they did not agree.
Returned back to Hunza at 2 PM and stayed at PTDC Hunza. Had late lunch there which was good. The place had wifi too. Stayed there for night. The weather was pleasant and it wasn’t crowded.
Naltar was on plan so next morning left Hunza at 8 45 AM and reached Nomal in around 1.5 hrs if I remember correctly. Hired a jeep (surf) for Naltar to visit three lakes. It took us 3.5 hours to visit the 3rd lake. We returned back to Nomal at around 5 PM. Took my car and travelled towards Gilgit. Reached gilgit at 6 PM. Took first decent hotel there Rupal Inn which was very average but stayed there for night.
Had dinner at Park Hotel and went to sleep.
Next day left for Islamabad at 8:30 AM. Reached Chilas at 11 AM, Babusar Top 12:30 PM, Naran at 2 PM and Islamabad at 10 PM.
Next day left Islamabad at 11 AM via M2 and reached Lahore at 3 PM.
Total Cost of the trip was as follows:
