On the subject of "racers", proper, professional or amateur racers never or almost never race on the streets. The crashes that they've seen and the appreciation of the laws of physics tells them to take it easy.
A colleague of my father's had a sunbeam alpine that he used to drive around the plantation where he used to work. He used the clutch just for setting the car in motion, all other gear changes were clutchless, but smoother than honey. I never rode with him, but I'd love to have a passenger seat experience of a great driver (and get some tips along the way).
