Citroen Traction Avant 11 BL 1952
A vehicle of revolutionary design, the Citroen Traction Avant is hailed by the press when it makes it’s debut in 1934. It is “so new, so bold, so full of original ideas, so different from what has gone before”. With a total output of 759,123 vehicles, the Traction Avant was in production for 23 years, 4 months and 15 days, a world record for its time. Still considered as a marvel today, the Traction Avant paved the way for the modern cars. Many enthusiasts and collectors still own authentic Tractions in roadworthy condition. The Citroen Traction Avant was as innovative as it was popular. Combining unitary construction, independent front suspension and front-wheel drive, it was years ahead of its time.
It was to stay in production for no less than twenty-three years, resulting in a total of three-quarters of a million cars, and for a whole generation it came to symbolize France in the same way as the Eiffel Tower and the Moulin Rouge. Its users included the police of Superintendent Maigret and the Gestapo of Adolf Hitler, not to mention grateful owners by the hundred thousand. Yet its birth was to swallow André Citroën's fortune, destroy his company and finally drive him to his death.
Andre Citroen hired the services of Lecot who started a solo marathon from Paris to Monte Carlo and back, time after time, day after day, in a Citroën TA. Each night he ate dinner and went to bed in his own hotel, each day he was out on the road again. Month after month he kept on going, taking another Monte Carlo Rally in his stride, and in just over a year he notched up 400,000 kilometres, a record which still stands to him and his unbreakable Traction Avant.
