so I was saying ...... (no offence to MB's lovers)u take care of an ordinary car such as a 67 Corona like you would a Mercedes, I bet you that you 'll find the Corona more bulletproof than the MB. We had one in the family from new - did over 200,000 miles without an engine overhaul. I had a 49 Jag with over 200,000 miles on it with one ring job. I used that car as a regular transport for 10 years and the car never missed a beat. I didn't maintain it well, hardly ever changed oil and in ten years maybe had it tuned a few times like changing plugs, point etc. The car never missed a beat. My 49 MB was no comparison. Then had a 1954 MB 300B - nice strong 6 cyll engine but nothing exciting. a 1954 Jag Mk VII that I drive(Kamran's car)these days is the sweetest sounding (roaring) engine that you 'll get to hear. That engine is 54 years old and its crank hasn't been to a machine shop. MB is no comparison. I love Mercedes cars and some of my favourite are a 1929 SSKL, a 500 K, a 540 K, 1956-7 300 SLR (not the Gullswing), a 280 SL Pagoda top, and the 300 SEL 6.3 Saloon. MB's after that dont excxite me - they became bulky, too plastic and phony. Engines were noisy specially the timing chains. I had a 300D ten years ago. Well maintained and carefully driven. One fine morning the head blew and a hairline crack was diagnosed. Looked all over Pakistan for a replacement head without success. I was told by every one that this is a common problem with 300 D's engines. I eventually sold the car 'as is where is'. My cousin has a one owner, very low mileage, carefully driven MB 450 SEL 1974-5 model - always serviced and repaired at Shahnawaz motors. Engine has been overhauled, auto gearbox stopped working that got replace, the A/C unit packed up and had to be replaced. He also has a 2002 380 SL - very low mileage, always garaged and well looked after. A/C unit has already been replaced. So MB's also breakdown. Khan Motors is flooded with latest model MB's with various serious problems (mostly electrical relating to engine). It has takem them quite a few years to make their F1 engine reliable enough to finish races which it could not do for many years till last year. Now they are one of the best engines, alongside BMW, Ferrari and perhaps Renault.
I am at the aiport waiting to board an Air Blue flight to Islamabad which is delayed by an hour...as usual
