They car in question is Hinda Civic 2000, 1.6 vti.

My question is how do I know if the vtec engages or not? What are the signs of vtec engaging?

If check engine light is not on then it is working fine. Vtech and VVti are mainly for better fuel mileage. There is no signs(like turbo) to tell if your Vtech has kicked in:)

If it has a manual transmission, put it into second or third and accelerate with that one gear. After a certain rpm, a vtec "kick" is supposed to be engaged. I'm not sure as to what rpm that might be, but for a lot of d series engines, it's around 4000. It depends again on if this is a single stage, or dual stage vtec. But in all likelihood, you should feel the car accelerate a bit fatser after that vtec kick. I think keep the car in 2nd gear and try and see if you feel something.

Bilal - it's an auto. Any way to check it on the auto? Is the forward thrust upon it's engagement noticeable like in the movies whe they press nos or something? Or is it not that noticeable.

You know, I doubt it. Back when I had the Camry, I used to feel the engine suddenly turn faster after about 3500rpm, but there's no real mechanism to make that specific engine do that.

I think you should feel something. It's not that "Go Baby" effect, but it was noticeable in the Camry... at least to the driver. The selector had an option to hold second gear, so I tried it that way. I think your civic also has an option like that.

u do feel a boost but its very minor, u have to be very attentive to notice that sudden boost.

Oh..it turns out I was expecting a little too much. I feel a little rush at around 5k, but it isn't something, like all you said, noticeable.

Vtec kicked in yo is effin over rated.

That vtec kicked in yo mentality mainly sticks with the B series and K series engines.
I've driven a friends' Civic Si, and you really DO feel the vtec kick in. Below a certain rpm, the car feels like it has no power whatsoever, and as soon as you get into the right rev range, the exhaust gets louder and vtec kicks in yo!

how many kilometers its doin in one km if its is somewhere near 10 vtec i working plus there is no way that in a vtec car vtec aint working and u are able to drive
vtec and non vtec engine of a same specie will have smae outputs except fuel economy and not more than 6-8 hp gain on the vtec one,and ya you can get a ricer manual with vtec engines if requested,i aint joking its official dont know if atlas guys are offering that yet

@bango, the D16 doesnt give u that big a kick n ur car being auto, the shift in 2nd gear would give u a more forceful jerk than the vtec kick so the feeling of the 'vtec kick' would be minimised. i dont know why that happens but it does!

As far as I remember driving a fully built B16 NA long time back. Before 4000rpm the car had absolutely no power but after about 4k (After the vtec kicked in) HAHA the things were different. Zero low end power, but High-end power was great.

Put to the car on halt, floor the accelerator after 3000rpm you will know yourself.

in d16 i think the vtec engages after either 4000rpm or 5000rpm. and in my civic 01 'matec, i didnt feel any kind of boost or a jerk when it crossed 5000rpm.
