in d16 i think the vtec engages after either 4000rpm or 5000rpm. and in my civic 01 'matec, i didnt feel any kind of boost or a jerk when it crossed 5000rpm.

There is a lot of incorrect info posted above. So i have to give some clarification

Vtec turns ON on following conditions
1. The car speed is above 40 Kmph (Stock Honda ECU configration, can be altered by chipping)
2. The coolent temperature is in normal range
3. There's no other sensor error and every thing else is working fine or not.
4. You Rev your car above 4.5 K RPM (Varries by varients of engines)

Yes, a VTEC engine can work absolutely fine with VTEC being disabled

Its not what you call "BOOST" ITs simply the amount of VALVES being opened. VTEC itself has many varients. E.g in 3stage Vtec technology, the engine works only on 12 valves if none of vtec has engaged. This gives better economy below VTEC range.

SO its unfair to say that if VTEC is working fine then the Car will give more economy. I have 3 Stage vtec in my car and the speed sensor wire has been demaged for more than a year. I am driving my car without VTEC just because of my laziness.... but engine works absolutely fine!!!!

I have the same model car , in automatic transmission just like urs 1.6 auto.....

The vtec on the stock engine with which this car comes with is an economy vtec....,vtec-e

these are not made for high rpm ( 5000rpm ) increase in power....
these vtecs just increase low end torque, from what i've heard they increase torque at about 2k rpm or so to increase power to give better efficiency.....

A gud way to check if the vtec is working or not is to do the following:

-locate the "vtec solenoid".....its the tube thingie on the left side of valve cover...
-locate the wire plug thingie which activates the solenoid....
-remove that plug....
-start the engine and drive and see if u feel any difference in the performance at low rpms...

Remove the "plug thingie" clearly shown in this picture....
After that, u wud get an engine malfunction light.....
And i dont take any responsibility to anything that happens to ur engine after doing any of this....

And i think Borny's civic also has an economy vtec.....

Almost all civics made in Pakistan have been fitted with vtec-e heads....
dont know about the current one...

Oh..it turns out I was expecting a little too much. I feel a little rush at around 5k, but it isn't something, like all you said, noticeable.

Vtec kicked in yo is effin over rated.

It will kick in at 5800-ish.

No dude, vtec is just a marketing strategy.....Its three decade old technology....
And anyone who has a bit of a technical knowledge can easily tell that vtec and vvt is just over-rated fancy clockwork....

There is no such thing as "vtec kicking in".....

Think of vtec as a device which gets the timing right when the engine loses it at high rpms and manages the valve lift.....and that's it.....there's nothing more to it....

the wire circled in red is the vtec solenoid wire....and it leads to the solenoid....

so disconnect it:

its a plug like thingy.....it will take a lot of force to disconnect....and dont break it....

But make sure u get the rite one......
