yes dude, im sure.....

I have tried it myself....
there was very minor difference.....i only revved the car to see difference, didnt drive it....
there was a minor sound difference...and a bit of a throttle response difference...

Went there, tried unplugging the jack from the socket, it wouldn't. I don't want to break it, so I'll have some mechanic do it.

But for my interest, can the OP (or anyone else) please clarify what exactly does VTEC and VVT-i systems do and how do they work? After all, only if one understands how it works is the basis of assessing whether it is working properly.

there's a place where u press on, its like a switch to sort of "unclip" the plug.....
press there and keep applying small amounts of pressure...
Or u cud simply take a scissors and.........
After that later on , u can go to mechanic and get the wire reconnected...

and btw dude, im only telling u a way to see if vtec makes much difference in the performance or not.....
the procedure i told u does not necassarily reveal if the vtec is working or not....(especially in this case where the vtec is an economy one....)

Great video, and I thank you for that.

However, my aim was to get people describe it in their own words to indicate whether they understand the concepts involved.

Without going into those details before others, the operation of VTEC gives better breathing and higher output in the higher rev range.

Everything else being equal, a side by side drag race (under safe and legal conditions) against an identical car with a known working VTEC engine is the easiest and most direct way.

They car in question is Hinda Civic 2000, 1.6 vti.

My question is how do I know if the vtec engages or not? What are the signs of vtec engaging?

Hey mate how is everything?
Your car has D16Y8 engine which is SOHC Vtec along with an auto tranny so you don't feel much of a difference while it kicks in (DOHC Vtec quite shows itself).
The Vtec engages right at 5,500 RPM in the engine you have. Keep on flooring it and keep an eye on the rpm meter as well as a keen ear to the sound. Right after 5,500 RPM mark, the RPMs will increase at quite a noticeable speed as compared to the time before it and the sound of the engine will also change (but you have to notice if of course). If you have CNG fitted in your car, the vtec power gets a bit lower as the air intake pipe is blocked by tape but it is noticeable even in this condition.
And it surely increases car's power as I have noticed.

Also get your throttle body and the valve behind it (don't know its name) cleaned. It has two little pipes in it which might be clogged as it is a 10 year old engine. They are responsible for the engine to perform better.
Visit mithu once as I had asked you to and get the engine tuned, you will feel the difference if compared to those pit shop guys. Every engine needs really good tuning to perform at optimum levels. The tuning free engines are just a myth (for avg. performance, it is quite right).

If the RPMs increase at a faster rate, the speed also increases at a faster rate but it is easier to notice the RPM meter as compared to the speedo.

You guys might find these dynographs from a Honda (not the same one, but the principle is the same) with VTEC and a Mazdaspeed 3 (with a comparable engine) with a turbocharger.

Notice the sudden jump in output when the VTEC "kicks in". This is the rush of power that people describe.

Now compare how suddenly the VTEC raises output compared to the surge of power built up by a turbocharger, which is quite noticeable too.

So a working VTEC should show up quite easy on the trained human butt dynamometer.
