Hey mate how is everything?
Your car has D16Y8 engine which is SOHC Vtec along with an auto tranny so you don't feel much of a difference while it kicks in (DOHC Vtec quite shows itself).
The Vtec engages right at 5,500 RPM in the engine you have. Keep on flooring it and keep an eye on the rpm meter as well as a keen ear to the sound. Right after 5,500 RPM mark, the RPMs will increase at quite a noticeable speed as compared to the time before it and the sound of the engine will also change (but you have to notice if of course). If you have CNG fitted in your car, the vtec power gets a bit lower as the air intake pipe is blocked by tape but it is noticeable even in this condition.
And it surely increases car's power as I have noticed.

But according to wat i've heard from honda experts...., the pakistani variant of this engine which was used in the 1999-2000 civic came with a vtec-e head as opposed to a performance vtec head...

@ bango: just go to a good workshop like "honda city showroom" near kalma chowk and ask them what a vtec is and what its doing in my engine..
What they told me was that it stops using one of the intake valves at low rpms and opens them both after a fixed rpm.....and that rpm is low....
And that is how it increases economy......

Well, that particular model revs all the way past 8,000 rpm, so you still have some room to play with. Plus, these models also usually have close ratio gearboxes, so that when you shift at the redline, the engine rpms in the next gear are close to 5500 rpm to take advantage of the sweet spot for the next gearchange.

Also note that in your particular model, the VTEC may kick in at a lower rpm, may be 3500, but I am guessing here.

It is a D16Y8. PK is the code for engines that were made to be in Pakistan.

These engines don't have E heads, otherwise the pick up would be lesser than a standard EXi. Neither are these performance heads like B16 series.

But for my interest, can the OP (or anyone else) please clarify what exactly does VTEC and VVT-i systems do and how do they work? After all, only if one understands how it works is the basis of assessing whether it is working properly.

VTEC: Variable Valve Timing with Lift Electronic Control
VVT-i: Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence.

i think the VTEC has this Lift Electronic Control while as the VVT-i does not :S just a guess

im not an expert here but, as far as i know, VTEC can vary valve lift and the time for which it is lifted.i mean vtec can vary the amount of lift,e.g. 1 inch or 0.8inch AND it can also vary the time for which the valve is lifted i.e. 0.1sec etc etc

while VVTI just controls the time, not the lift.

am i right mr.vcheng?

haha had the same confusion when i had a 00 model oriel a/t!
i thought vtec is some kind of a turbo lol!
but then came to know aboutt by myself i.e when the car comes in 2nd gear from 1st(with a jhatka (common prob. in that model)) i pushed the accelerator harder n around 5rpm there was a bit difference in performance(not much noticeable) but that was the vtec n for only a few secs n then the car changed to 3rd gear!

beautiful and informative discussion over here bt it seems that many people are much confused :)... faez had made a confusion over here by introducing the VTEC-e concept which i was unaware off so wont say anything regarding this ... as far as i know the VTEC kick is just a jerk increasing the rev above 5k rpm increasing the performance and causing the car to accelerate a bit more faster as compared to the Acceleration below the VTEC point

For the new city the vtec engages @ 3200 rpm ,thats when i have felt the sudden increase.
May be i am wrong because that has only been observed and not tested
