That is crazy!!! This is themost confusing thread ever. No two persons have agreed to anything. 50 comments , forty theories. Does anyone know the right answer ?

So your question was if the vtec's working in your car or not....
ok... Just start the engine... if the check light doesn't appear through out the journey, this means there's nothing wrong in your car and every thing's working fine.... so is the vtec..... Happy driving !!!

No D-Series can offer what you call "KICK" it can be achieved only by remapping the ecu... Waleed (Iceman1 at pw) once remapped my ecu to feel that kick... even then it was not that much significant.... to feel the "KICK" take a ride in b18c or h22

further more, VTEC-E engines ran with OBD-1 ECU's and their piston and rings had different specifications!!!!

I think you are wrong.....vtec-e engines like d16y5/4 etc etc are OBD2 i think and they are vtec-e. And i think , wat they sold in pakistan was a y8 block wid a y5 vtec-e head.....and OBD2 ecu.....

And the signs that vtec-e is working is that ur car shud give u around 12-14km/l on average driving if everything is in brand new or good shape....

OK, here's the video of Wasay's better runs.

In the first gear, I feel there's a sudden gain after 5k rpm-which seems like full flooring of the accelerator (he didn't do that from the start to avoid excessive wheelspin I believe). In the second and/or third gear, there's nothing noticeable.

Or am i missing something?

@bango: There is more to the sensation than just the rate of rev increase. The sound changes subtly, the vibrations of the engine and its note changes too.

... again: why not to install a VTEC light. Well its not the sign of power band for VTEC-E but you know if the light is on you're messing up with your fuel economy.

bro simply remove the grip from vtec solenoid if the car runs same like it use to before then it means vtec is not engaging otheriwise if car lags then it means the vtec is okay.
the secondly easy way is remove filter if ur car suddenly get louder at topend it means the vtec is kicking in
remeber try all this on d1=L to notice or D2 atleast

I find the second option easier - will try that, since I know where the filter is better than I know where the vtec solenoid is.

P.S. Mine doesn't have an L or D1. D2 is the only thing I have.

His point was simple, take a 12V bulb, connect it to the wires where the vtec solenoid is connected, and if the bulb turns on, that means the vtec is ok....

Maybe u can also use a multimeter, but im not sure about this.....

u can do a modification to a wire that goes into the transmission, its connected to the throttle, very easy to spot......
this wire tells the transmission when to shift gears.....If u can disconnect this wire from throttle and make it not shift into second, then u dont need "L".....

@all: what we get in pakistan is a special d-series variant called D16Y6......It may not be a vtec-e but its made for economy and the vtec is not that aggressive....

wese i recommend bango to get a head swap done with a proper Y8 head if he wants to feel the "kick" of vtec........

Did you read my first post?

Now, a simple and rather cool method to know whether an engine is VTEC-E or simple VTEC is to install a VTEC light. Its not really some rocket science, more simple than you thought. Just go ahead and install one if you’re so concerned. Its also good to recognize whether the ECU is allowing VTEC to work or is it some other problem. If the light works but there’s no VTEC than it could be a clogged solenoid (yes they do get clogged some time), low oil pressure, bad sensor or whatever.

If it turns on at some 3Kish RPMs than it has to be an eco-VTEC, if you have to rev it to some 5K range than its a simple VTEC.
Another thing: VTEC-E engines usually have a bit lowered rev limit, say 6500 to 7000 - and don't really like to be revved, so if your engine is a bit sluggish above higher RPMs 5500 or so than most probably its VTEC-E.

BTW, my both my 3-Stage motors (D16W9, D15B) go to limp mode if the solenoid is disconnected.

I am really sorry.... I got you guys in confusion.... actually it was me who was confused.. I realised that I was wrong.... d16y5 came with VTEC-e.. so does the Pakistani version. Really sorry bout that actually my head's not in right place these days due to few personal matters and I've become a bit stubborn and due to this I got over confident of my experience and knowledge regarding vtecs!! sorry again for wasting your time
