My question is simple - How to know if the vtec engages or not?

I've mentioned it somewhere earlier as well : All we honda owners boast upon only one thing - VTec, and its funny that we don't even know what it is and what it does, how it works and how to identify if it exists or not.

I am really sorry.... I got you guys in confusion.... actually it was me who was confused.. I realised that I was wrong.... d16y5 came with VTEC-e.. so does the Pakistani version. Really sorry bout that actually my head's not in right place these days due to few personal matters and I've become a bit stubborn and due to this I got over confident of my experience and knowledge regarding vtecs!! sorry again for wasting your time

So we've agreed upon the fact that the civic's in Pakistan do not give the VTec boost after 5500 RPM, its just in the head, right?

All systems have emissions concerns, depending on their markets.

Yes, VTEC has its own issue with emissions, but due to the fact that it is sudden switch between 2 or 3 profiles, the ECU mapping is simple compared to that of a VVTL-i system where it is a continuous variation.

That is also why BMW's Valvetronic system did not catch on widely, and they used the VANOS system more.

yet d16w9 is dual vtec when kicks in quite earlier so its not much noticeable

Well i have 2004 vti AT....some of guys here said that vtech engages at 4000 or 5000 rpm.....i am wondering that in prosmatech how can i take my rpm to 5000 while driving the car coz auto transmission always changes gear before reaching 5000 rpm and due to this gear change rpm will come down........without idle throttling its quite difficult to reach up to 5000 rpm......

You flooooooor the accelerator, and it'll go to 7000+.

In neutral or parking it'll cut off at 5500 I believe.

ok agreed......but before reaching 7000 the gear will shift to the next one and rpm will come down.....on what mode should i place gear lever...2 , D3 or D???

Just put it in D and floor it, it will reach the higher RPM's.

ZISH 16 : but if u want to keep hitting the rev limiter , put in "2" and then at around 110km/hr, u shall be rev limiting.....then u can check the vtec....try this on motorway....

since i live in khi so hitting 110 km/hr is quite difficult on normal roads but if ill get a chance I'll definitely try this....thanx guys..

Bhaijaan Yours is a simple vtec engine which gives more power than the economy vtec. If faiz doesn't want to agree, no worries yet economy heads were never used in here. Try a simple test. Run your car with 8th gen civic or a toyota altis and if your car gives any of them a hard time while accelerating, it is a normal vtec.
Both our cars have the same engines and mine does the same as described above. We can talk a lot and write sentences upon all the technology in the world yet practical experience is something more reliable. If PK6 block had an economy head, it would have lesser torque than SE saloons and significantly lesser torque than the new civic or altis which is not the case. And yes vtec engages right at 5,500 rpm. I'll meet you in a few days and demonstrate
There has been much talk but not a single proof provided even on paper that there was an economy vtec in 2000 civic. Moreover, the average of economy vtec exceeds that of the cars in Pakistan. It should hover around 20kmpl or say around 16-17 kmpl to drop the benchmark even lower; on highways at the least at normal speeds which is never the case.

Why are you expecting to feel the power curve of a D series VTEC which is supposed to be the heart of a family sedan.

Have you ever felt the kick of N VCT in Nissan Sunny or MIVEC in Lancer or even vvti or vvti tl in GLi and Altis.

That should only be expected in a b series or K series engines.

If the VTEC will not work, car will have a serious power deficit, floor your pedal down and you will feel a slight change in power at around 3,000-5,000 RPM.

VTEC will only add to power and acceleration will not be effected.

Try the runs with the AC off, and other noises like the stereo eliminated as well.

VTEC faults can occur intermittently though rarely: low or wrong viscosity oil, sludging of the head, damaged solenoids, electrical faults (corroded connectors, loose connections) etc. These are relatively easy to eliminate.
