Want electrical or hydraulic power steering conversion on my RX 7 first generation

That is exactly what I want......If I can get the steering box shown in the above thread.....the problem is over.....power pump and other electronics can be sorted out easily....

Ready to pay any price for this power steering setup...

i have a half cut of a fd3 rx7! if u want i can arrange the whole power steering setup of it for u! that would include the assembly the pump etc etc

Thanks brother......I am not sure that fd3 has a rack n pinion or recirculating ball type steering.....
FB...or first generation Rx7 has a recirculating ball type steering wheel.....I will try to get pics and post here....

Here is a pic of power steering box of first generation RX7 ....we are looking for......Non power steering box currently installed on the car is similar minus the power unit....

The only correct way out is to get the complete power steering gear and shaft of a RHD FB RX7 - you can then use a steering pump from a similar setup or make a bracket to fit one to your engine, the hydraulic return and cooling lines and oil bottle would be a walk in the park.

Do not try to rig some other sort of steering box into your car - you have a pretty nice example of an FB

Thank you so much for your input ......I really appreciate......I always read your technical replies in different threads and impressed by your knowledge....You are right that there should not be some silly alterations.......Lets see,if we can find this steering box.....I think some other mazdas must be using this as well ...like 626 or 929 ....and we should be able to locate one from Lahore /pindi/Karachi.....fingers crossed...
What do you think about electrical power steering ......if we can install one in the steering column .....speed sensing etc can be sorted out later....
please give suggestion about the possibilities about EPS...

The gear ratios in a manual and power steering box are different, so adding an electric which would itself require serious rigging here would end up in a very vague steering requiring input correction 90% of the time you are driving in a straight line.

If you have had a professional alignment done on this by a Mazda dealership - you will notice they would have locked the steering box first with a lock bolt then adjust everything. Its not as simple as simply setting the toe like on every car. My point is that do it correctly or leave it alone because it will become a giant headache if done incorrectly.

You are absolutely right and I totally agree with you that it should be done properly.....
First priority is to fit its original hydraulic power steering.....I think that the same power box must have been shared by other Mazdas of the eighties ....like 626/929 rear wheel drive cars.....
I have seen manual boxes or at least one box of the same kind....but then lost interest in that .....
I have no intentions to do anything wrong with the one fitted right now on the car....
If we go for some experimentation ....we'll remove and preserve the original box/column......in case we fail....they can be fitted back...:D....
Hopefully we should be able to find the power box for this car.I am trying to find out that which other Mazda used the same box (power) so that our search may be widened....
But putting a power steering is absolutely essential now in this car ...if I want to drive and enjoy this car....

Power Steering came in i think Series III in first generation RX7. You can source a used part from 1983 - 1985 RX7 forums easily Rehman bhai. Before that RX7 had manual box.

power steering came in first generation Rx7 (FB) GSL SE cars only......The same power steering box was shared by Mazda 929 and 626 of the same years....any of them will work....
Also considering the electrical power steering in it...(EPS)...if possible..

No success in finding Knight rider lights....

And I think there will be NO SUCCESS in finding the power steering box as well ...neither converting it into electric power steering....

So many experts around....but no one bothers to spend some time and efforts in this respect.....:(...

I dont think the mazda 929 box will work, the pitman arm is different on a 929, the really old (1974-76) 929 Luce shared the exact same steering/suspension setup as the 1980-1983 Mazda 626 but I never came across any 626 that had power steering.

The later 1977-1979 929 Luces had power steering that has a longer pitman arm and longer idler arm and slightly inboard knuckle eyes for the tierods (when my dad bought a full loaded 929 he came to know of this anomaly at the yard when he wanted to replace the drag link).

The RX7 power steering box is geared for less turns (read as sporty driving) and the knuckle mount angle would be different too. Best for you is to find a box from a 7, and for that it would have to be sourced from Australia - them folks are still tooling around in the first gens and are RHD.
