This is an excellent average. My petrol expenses due to low average is literally eating my wallet - about Rs. 4500 for only 60 km drive per week.

I hope changing the O2 sensor will improve the fuel average.

Kindly update here if you change the O2 sensor and see a difference in average as I am going through the same trouble since a year.

Dear all,

The car is having issues over the past week, the RPM drops, the car loses acceleration while driving, the accelator doesnt work. Have to shut the engine and start again. The egine check light is on. On cold start, there is knocking sound for a second then it goes away.

Took it Irshad bhai several times, he cleaned the throttle body, injectors and spark plug. He also replaced the MAF, AIR, O2 sensor, fuel pump, accelerator pedal. Nothing worked. The first time the error code was about the O2 sensor, the second time the code is startabilty malfunction.

I took the car to the electrician, he checked the wiring, fuses and he couldnt find anything wrong. He said that the engine timimg could be off and said to take the car back who built the engine.

had similar issues in my Baleno 2004 and everything seemed perfect. went to all possible places in karachi but it didnt help. in the end i went to my old mechanic (who was not in karachi for long) and the issue was of bad timing and crank sensor. the lower crank sprocket was worn out and timing was being disturbed. both these works were done by him and car ran perfect till i sold it (2+ years later).

it appears that the VVTI drive sprocket or VVTI sensor malfunction. which engine oil grade you are using at present? at overhaul what was the condition of VVTI drive sprocket was it replaced with new item or from scrapyard?

what is condtion of ECU connectors ?

Using 5W-30 Caltex.
It was from the scrapyard as we couldnt find the new one.

This is a terrible idea! - and installing the VVTi actuator is not a simple install and tighten job either, it needs to be installed and torqued in "unlocked and advanced position" to the cam face - then rotated back to locked position.

But as your unit is from scrapyard it maybe having a worn control piston or its bore from previous use.

after how many kms usage the issue has popped up?
am sure you noted down the odometer at overhaul. what is odometer reading now. Is there any issue of fuel consumption and performance after which you noticed the problem?

Wished there was a new one available. Checked everywhere but couldnt find it.

click this - the VVTI drive part number is 13050-21040. It also has approx. price to order the brand new from UAE or anywhere else in your access.

If it has worked fine since overhaul in Sept - Oct as in post 201 above, there is something minute which is off mark. take it back to workshop they will be able to fix it.

Avoid scrapyard items as much as possible please.

Within 15 days of engine rebuilt, took to the mechanic for noise, there was a timing chain issue, tensioner was bad and was replaced.. Drove it again for couple of weeks, took it back again for the noise and check engine light, cam phaser was replaced. Then took it again for the bad fuel average, O2 sensor was replaced. The fuel economy got imporved.

This time, fuel pump replaced, some cabling, fuel injectors replaced.
Have been pouring money into it without resolve.

• please list items which are from scrapyard in newly rebuild engine?

@capsat, yes it could be something small but it has to do with engine. Been spending money on trail and error. The car is currently at the workshop, hopefully it will get resolved this time.

The first time, the tensioner was used, the second time the chain and tensioner was installed new.

Leave the tensioner behind. Did you check the fuel trim data ?????
Please check the stft and Ltft asap and post them here remember the bogiing can be due to bad O2 sensor it will not register any dtc on this varient so hook up the scanner with the said parameters and drive it as much as you can and see the data the data must be in negative values if yes then at the same spot disconnect the O2 sensor and drive it again.
I face a lot of these issues on narrowband O2 sensors and specially on old corollas
