Its not that the educated lot doesnt want to get their hands dirty, Customers dont want to pay for quality work.
I had a workshop, I also have some degrees, I paid quite a lot for tooling over the years like deep level scanners, oscilloscopes, airtools, lifts etc, paid to get waveform data from other people (countries), Paid to buy service literature and wiring diagrams. Tools of various sizes, made special service tools etc etc, Had a lathe in my shop along with generic machine shop tools like presses and welders to make tools as required.
But 95% of customers thought that shops like mine are too expensive, then they proceeded to have their cars repaired by "tukka ustaad" in small shop who would not know the first step to approach the problem. I closed public dealing for this reason and also other issues like empty promises and also fake currency etc, and only worked for fleets or referral of my old private customer/client.
small example, customer complaining that I replaced suzuki baleno crank sensor, repaired, shielded and loomed its wiring which was ripped from snapped belt in about 1 hour and charged more than "lektrishann" that said it would take a day. - Not seeing that their car is ready to drive in less than a quarter of the time and is also sparkly shiny - all they cared was "itnay paisay maang rahe ho"
