The China Automotive Technology and Research Center announced the new fourth C-NCAP crash test standards in Tianjin last week, wccdaily.com.cn reported today. At the same time, the CATRC announced the crash test ratings for twelve more passenger vehicles, with three domestic own brand sedans earning ratings of five stars. The new standards will be universally implemented on July 1 of this year.
Six of the models tested this time were from joint ventures, listed as follows: the Buick GL8 (Shanghai GM), eight generation Hyundai Sonata (Beijing Hyundai), Toyota Reiz (FAW Toyota), Honda City (Dongfeng Honda), Citroën 508 (Dongfeng Peugeot) and Kia Sportage-R (Dongfeng Yueda Kia). The Sonata placed the highest out of the group with a score of 50.7 points, earning a rating of five stars. Following successful tests of the Honda CR-V, Honda Accord and Kia K5, the Sonata is the fourth model to garner a score of over 50 points. The five other JV models also managed to earn five stars.
Domestic own brands accounted for the other six models tested. Among them, the JAC Heyue, Geely's Emgrand EC8 and BYD S6 all managed to earn five star ratings. The EC8 scored 49.6 points, only 0.4 points under the 50 point threshold, while the Heyue and S6 each scored 46 points. Meanwhile, the Tianjin FAW Weizhi V2 and Changan CX20 only managed to score three stars, while the Haima Family earned four.
The CATRC tested a total of 29 models over the course of last year, with 62 percent of those earning five star ratings. However, with the new system becoming standard this year, the vehicles will have to be tested again, during which their grades may fall.
The CATRC is looking to improve Chinese standards to match international levels, Director Zhao Hang said. The new C-NCAP standards are a large part of that. Among the changes, the new standards will take into account safety of passengers sitting in the rear seats, increase head-on collision test speed to 64 km/h, as well as introducing new tests to measure safety features such as ESC. The overall score will be increased from the current 51 points to 62 to accommodate the modifications.
