Engine Oil preferred for long route / motorway drives

Hi Guys,

Hope all the pakwheelers are doing well and keeping safe during these conditions. I have a quick question to ask. I have a corolla 2011 model about 140k driven. I want to know if its true that regardless of the mileage of the car, if you plan to drive your car on long routes / motorways for a consistent period of time then you should use thicker oil? Please guide me in this regard.

Thicker oil is for really harsh driving conditions only. 46- 50 deg c temp, full load 450kg , constant running. Many car manuls state that.

Use same oil for Motorways
Motorway is not a big deal for engine, 5w30 oil is recommended for corollas, same in city and motorway also

Motorway is not harsh on your engine. Getting stucked in traffic is harsh for engine.
Use the same oil. Only choose thicker viscosity once you start noticing engine oil reduction.

Don't use 20w40 unless you observe engine oil reduction.
Continue using oil which you're already using.

Increasing viscosity with mileage is just a myth, you should stick to recommended grade, which is 5w30, If car is not consuming oil

There's a theory, increase oil grade with mileage, like when recommended is 0w20, at 50k kms use 5w30 and 100k 10w40 I wasn't able to understand logic behind this, because I've never came across manfacturer recommendation like this, can anyone explain in detail? Thanks

Thanks Usman. I have actually bought this car recently and the previous owner doesn't have a clue of which oil has been used in recent past.

Would really appreciate if I can be guided on the best oil for this age and mileage of the car. I also plan to drive the car for long intervals with 04 passengers and a reasonable load in the truck (say a few bags)

For a newer car, I would definitely prefer a 5W30.

That is bullshit. All VVTI engines should use thin oils. thicker oils mess up the mechanism for VVTI. no mechanic will tell u that.
The things that mechanics propose are applicable to cars produced in late eighties and early nineties.
Remember that mechanics are not car owners. (if they are usually u ll see them driving old charades, mehrus, obsolete models). They never have the Owner's experience. They dont understand the technicalities about certain matters as they are not qualified enough.

so far what i know by going through owner's manual of cars from year 2000 and later. No modern day EFI engine shall be used with engine oil higher then 30 viscosity. 0W-30 5W-30, 10W-30 depending upon your weather conditions. The figure before W stand for atmospheric temperature at cold start.

Please use 0w20 or at max 5w30.

No car built after 2000 should be using a thicker oil like 10w40 or 20w50. That will kill its efficiency and even the engine itself long term... and give bad economy too.

0w20 and 5w30 fully synthetic are meant to be used in all sorts of conditions, whether extreme hot or extreme cold.

thicker oil will further deteriorate the engine by creating further sludge blocking the oil pickup channel from sump means at cold start engine will run dry for few seconds. Thinner the oil at cold start better the lubrication.

Thank you guys, so I sum it up as thinner the oil, better it is for the engine's life in the long run. I am going to pour in 5W30 in my from now onwards.

Please also let me know if 5W30 fully synthetic is good for such old engine i.e. 150k driven or should I go for non synthetic 5W30 (if available and please pardon my lack of knowledge )

I live in Lahore and here temperature can go up to 46-48 degrees. Is 5W30 good enough for such climate in summers?

Thanks Bro, I agree to your point however, please advice if fully synthetic oil is good for such an old car as I heard that fully synthetic oil is not meant for all sorts of cars.

One more important point. Is it required to immediately change the oil after a long travel of around 1,000 - 1,500 kilometres? or we should complete the time duration of the oil whatever is prescribed.
