Go to a Total Petrol station. They stock engine oils. Just use a lighter grade oil in your car. It'll run smoother and return better fuel economy.

I went to Toyota Garden Motors Today.
They said recommended Oil for your car with 100,000km+ mileage is 20w-50 which you are already using
They say maybe you have to tuneup your car for better mileage and fuel efficiency.
Mjhy samjh ye nai ati k 20w-50 k bad hi car ko tuning yad aa gyi hy jab k tuning recently krai hy mein ny!!!

You are using 10/40... 20/50 is way too thick for this engine... Manual mein kahan likha hai k 1 lac k bad yai oil use krna?? Engine need more force to push 20/50 Grease type thick oil.. I prefer 5/30 ...you,ll feel much much improvement.. Total 5/30 would be Better.. even 10/40 is good...but 20/50 never...
Mechanics either Toyota or local workshops are same ..they are maniac .. Truck ki bati.. No innovation.. Ustaad Shagird type

5w-50 works beautifully in this engine. No issues and no vvti rattling

thats too thick of an oil IMO.. 5/40 or 5/30 would be preferred..
like wise 20/50 is as same as 5/50 at optimum engine temperatures .. at cold start 5/50 would be better.. but once engine heats up to optimum temp (in few minutes) both 50 grade oils will act same.. so user will get no benefits/improvements

In real world, i get best mileage with 5w-50. 5w-30 was also less

use 5W-30 and change the filter as well.

5w30 is what recommended for your car in all season. If your mechanic tells about how many years of experience he has then show him owner manual.

Bhai I also sell Toyota Genuine parts and I have seen counterfeit too. Many people used to scan the box to check its fake or original but now the packing is changed, the counterfeit filter is packed in Original box so that no one can recognise that its fake. Only dealers or experts can recognise.

I have Corolla Axio 2007 with 1NZ-FE 1500cc engine and my car is reducing oil from 3 years I was using Shell 10W-40. My car consumes 500ml to 1000ml in 5k kms change interval which I think is normal. The oil change guy said that change the oil grade to 20W-50, so I tried 5W-50 instead of 20W-50 because I thought that at normal operating temperatures the grade will be same. I bought Mobil 1 Fully synthetic 5W-50 Price Rs. 8800, but my car consumed that oil too and the car was sluggish fuel average dropped to 15 on motorway, on 10W-40 I was getting 18-19 kmpl on motorway. So now I switched to 10W-30 grade which is recommended and I have plan to change it on every 2k or 2.5k max with Genuine oil filter. Always use the recommended oil grade with Genuine oil filter.

oil consuming can be due to clogged up oil control rings.. which allows engine oil to pass into combustion chamber and burnt.. synthetic oils kept these oil rings clean through out engine life.. using mineral and even semi synthetic oils produces sludge and gunk into tiny holes of oil control rings and oil which should come back down into oil sump, went into upper side and burn.. this is very common when oil not regularly changed.. try engine flush to clean these area and you,ll notice oil consumption issue resolved,, you may need to flush in 2,3 oil changes...
