Lahore High Court puts a ban on washing cars with hosepipes in Punjab

On Tuesday 18th December 2018, Lahore High Court (LHC) has banned washing cars with hosepipes in Punjab.

According to the details, the court in a written order has directed to wash the vehicles with water buckets rather than using a hosepipe in an aim to conserve water in the province. The order has been issued by LHC judge Justice Shahid Karim after a petition was filed in the honourable court concerning the issue.

The court has directed the Lahore Development Authority and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to fully impose the ban on service stations. Not only the ban has been imposed on service stations, but using hosepipes to wash vehicles in homes has also been banned.

Measures to aware people regarding the ban should be taken immediately, asserted the court in its notification. Moreover, the Government of Punjab will ensure to fully implement the court’s order and will notify the authority regarding the progress on the order.

Earlier, On Thursday, 29th November 2018, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order to suspend all the service stations that are functional without installing the proper recycle system.

Is this a joke? This should mean the end of all service and detailing stations then? Should I also sell my pressure washer that I just bought since its also banned in homes. Who on earth runs these high courts.

In my opinion it's an excellent step taken by government. This should have happened decades before.

Everybody has observed plenty of water wastage at all service stations/homes.

On one side we are struggling for survival based on water, and on other side so much wastage of water for just car wash......

Probably, water which is being spent on one car wash may server one family for a week or more.....

It's a big shame for all of us as in "Thar" type of areas many people/children are dying due to the shortage of water and on the other hand we are just wasting/using water for car wash..... Seem total in justice!

As of me, I am not doing anything for them in this regard, but everyone can contribute by take these type of steps.

Every individual's effort will make difference...

May Allah forgive us on all our ignorant/known short comings....

Bucket wash method, water less car wash or any other washing technique should be adopted.

Its about time that court has ordered an excellent decision. Water is a life line for any country heck its a life line for human being. Water wastage in countries like ours should have been banned decades ago but i guess its never too late than nothing. @hassangr8 i completely support your point of view even though i am detailing freak as well and have also a pressure washer but keeping in mind the broader perspective and to contribute the nations cause i am hands down with LHC decision.

Sir Just tell me one thing who do you support a country without water or a country without service station??
Water crises is global issue, south africa is now facing acute shortage of water and people all over and specifically in cape town stand in line for water. they cannot think of washing the car in this situation. The situation is that much worst that they re-use the bathing water in toilets.
Yes i understand your point of view that many people will loose their jobs but without water theres no concept of life and we as a nation love to waste water. Remember Allah will also ask what you have done with the resources i had given and where did u consume them and that my friend will be very difficult to answer at-least for me..

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
It's always bitter sweet when a desperate measure leads to possible job losses for some people.
Also, I would argue that multi national companies such as Coca Cola, Pepsi and Nestle are responsible for some of the most criminal water extraction in our country, but that's a different story altogether.

I would hope that a balance can be reached, but I can certainly see the sentiment. While I can sympathize with the job loss argument, I don't think the detailing fans are justified when the country is facing a crisis.

Water is really a scarce commodity. Ban muslim showers, too. Lota should be allowed only.

Not a bad idea at all @ehalin, in fact we were using these lotas some 20-25 years ago when there were no muslim showers.

However, this ban can be only an interim solution, the long-term solution should be to encourage (rather forcefully) the recycling of water at commercial and to some possible extend at domestic level. Fresh water should only be supplied and used for drinking (or may be bathing) purposes, rest of the activities (commercial/domestic) should be carried out with recycled water.

Horrible Truth........

An average 250 - 300 Liters drinking water is being used on one car wash whereas an average 4-5 person family consumes 70-80 liters water in a week that means around 300 Liters of water is enough to feed a family for complete month.

I was just thinking if one service station washed 50 cars in a day that means 15000 Liters of drinking water has been wasted/consumed by this single entity.

Just calculate how much water is being wasted by all service stations in a day and obviously we are equally participating well in this.

I said this long time ago that detailing wastes alot of water,i washed my car in the rain and dried it in the porch.We need to conserve water ....good step
