my experience of seeing split window beetles in Karachi
The one in this post
3 that were destroyed by Shershah junkyard about the same time they cut the Porsche 356 (the beetle were at random car workshops whose owners had abandoned them) - mangled with (light changes etc)
1 fully working car in black bought by some "gora" and shipped out of Pakistan later - this car was in North Nazimabad and was in amazing working order - (old freind of my late uncle). - I believe the only additional thing he had put on was the crank handle starter at the rear..

I believe there is one more in Karachi - its a faded white and its still got the oldschool Karachi plates on it (motorcycle type reg numbers) - I have seen this car once only outside a house behind AO clinic in Nazimabad - not abandoned but in average nick, clean exterior with the little round tail lamps - and largish bumpers

pls note the post of Xulfiqar .... I was after this split window since 1996...even at that time, the buzz around the car enthusaists was that this is the only one in Pakistan....like they seeing is believing...I wonder if anyone has any pics - it would be wonderful to discover more split window cars....but I have my doubts. A lot of times 'oval' is mistaken for a 'split wndow'.

many ovals had been surgically redone to big window ones too - hence they are missing now - but anyways I know what a split window is and what I saw I wrote. Dont usually snap pics of interesting stuff (I know dumb dumb)

that 's why I didnt address you directly as didnt want to challenge your information.....asked asadishaque as he sleeps eats and drinks VW's...just wanted his views. Why I say what I did, a friend recently who has had a few classic cars including a MG convertible from 40's, is now retired from PIA and drives a fintail 220 as his regular car....has a few of them. He saw my split and was willing to swear that there's another one in Lahore. Had it checked a few days ago....it turned out to be oval. So till I see it I am not believing it.

thanks....checked the site out. They dont seem to have parts for oval or split. I have sent them a small parts list by e-mail, lets see.

Today Mohsin bhai and I were discussing this. Now had this story come from someone else, I would have had serious doubts. But I trust you 100% and all you have said it believable to me. Your postings bring out much technical and practical aspects and I always see you know what you talk about. In short, I hold great respect for you.

Bugs being destroyed at Shershah.....well why not a (or rather as you tell us 3) split window. Those idiots dont know the value of ANYthing. I myself rescued two split buses from their clutches after a lot of struggle. Im not surprised at all. They have more (vintage) blood on their hands. For them anything metal is a piece of metal, like to a butcher any animal is a piece of meat. What charm would a split window hold for them??

Can you go and check out the AO Clinic walli split??? Would it not be a thrill if another split is discovered and saved??? Or at least brought to the notice of our archives??

Even I have heard stories of a split or two here and there but so far have not been able to physically go and track them down, although that is much needed.

  Hmmm....ovals with big windows....Abroad this was a trend and some companies even sold kits to convert a split/oval into a big window car. Maybe this happened here too in Pakistan or our ever improvising denters carried out the conversions themselves......Shall keep my eyes peeled now. At least I can spot a converted oval or split from the crowd.

I must encourage to keep a camera with you all the time and snap and post pics please.

Okay.....today was an interesting day!!

Had the honor of watching some history being made. Went with Mohsin bhai to the denters shop and watched some real action.....let the pics do the talking (with some comments thrown in for good measure)......

Yikes!! The bug was on its side, carefully supported by tires and all. The denter was towards the end of his effort to unbolt the body from the 'pan.
