Although I am around 2 years late in sharing my view, still I would like to make one point clear. Many fellows have commented that yaris has cvt while Altis 1.6 has torque converter based auto transmission. Just want to mention that even CVTs have torque converters causing the initial lag. That initial lag is due to torque converter and rubber band effect of the belt on pulleys.
Further, most of the reviews report altis as giving 11 to 12 in city while yaris as 12 to 15. This difference will cost only 1000 to 2000 extra rupees per month to an average city user. In cities, millage is usually governed by idelling time.
Further, convetional auto gearbox is still one of the most preferred choice for luxury and high power vehicles due to reliability and durability. Second choice is usually DCTs including most of the european models. CVT is being preffered only in some low to medium class Japanese models. Just for comparison, Older civic models, city, Altis 1.6 with 4 or 5 speed conventional gear box are capable of reaching 0 to 100 in nearly same or better time as compared to most of the competitors having CVTs.
Most of all, Altis is way spacious as compared to yaris. This difference is more obvious or annoying for tall or heavy people (like me)

Totally agree with you. People just criticise this transmission for the sake of criticism, fact is in these many years there wasn’t any issue reported in this transmission but customers face issues in cvts of civic and grande( whether due to negligence or poor maintainence) …

Further, in recent corolla model, toyota has added first physical gear to CVT transmission. This transmission is best suited for hybrid systems.

YARIS ATIV X If You Are Looking for Automatic with decent power and compact sedan

12th Gen not coming anytime soon. Between these two it depends on your requirements.

If your need is subcompact car with more features and CVT, then Yaris Ativ X, fuel average is also a plus.

If you want a compact sedan, more powerful engine, spacious cabin & trunk and better looks, then Altis 1.6, You have to compromise on few features and fuel economy.

Both are different cars. If you want a sub compact sedan then yaris. If you need a spacious car, then Altis. The fuel economy difference in real world is around 1-1.5 km/l in same driving style and same traffic. The similar value is due to local traffic conditions, else yaris is capable of delivering better economy. Both are good cars, sound proffing is good in both, suspension is good. 0 to 100 is also very close. Both were originally designed in 2012-2013 by Toyota intl.
As for corolla's next generation, I have heard that that its not coming anytime soon. And when launched, corolla will be hybrid which will be too much expensive to aford so its good time to own a bigger car. Civic is already avove 5 million now.
