diesel quality is getting better since end of 2016, it was 5000ppm which came down to 500ppm.

Took diesel fortuner's test drive today. I really liked it. There was no sound of diesel engine inside the cabin. Paddle shifters was quite responsive than previous petrol 2.7 4x4 variant. It was smooth and comfortable. Much better than petrol variant.

1GD recommended Parts per million PPM is maximum 50ppm only.. Whereas Our pumps on the contrary ranges from 4000-6000ppm in general. Few company operated PSO pumps recently improved but still ranges in between 600-800ppm.. The best we can get..
Its disaster for 1GD and a havoc after 20000kms to maintain on this diesel.

In many countries 1GD is still not introduced due diesel quality..

had a 2d saloon in family and khalo used to change fuel filter every 15k km and after 90k km mileage engine was producing a hell of sounds and was quite weak and vibrations were on peak.

People are skeptical about new Fortuner rather desire the same 4x4 petrol variant back.. As they don't want the Honda civic turbo saga & fuel issue drama to repeat and suffer.. 1GD is alot demanding in terms of diesel fuel quality and if not met for certain time & mileage will give even severe headaches then the knocking alone.. People who have kept knows very well that Diesel is not petrol and its very obvious here in Pakistan.

1- 1GD Diesel fuel Req is 50ppm (Recommended) and 500ppm (allowable)

3- If our fuel stations have 500 ppm Euro-2 diesel then it shouldn’t have any problems as it’s CN is 48

Just a few clarifications:

1. On toyota south africa the advisory for 1KD/2KD engines is also 50ppm/500ppm same as for 1GD/2GD engines. Any explanation?

I am not sure but in south africa Toyota probably is following different emissions standard and recommendation to use 50ppm sulphur diesel might be coming from these limitations. But here in Pakistan I ve confirmed 1GD has only EGR which works perfectly fine with 500ppm sulphur diesel.
2. You are right about cetane no.
3. Diesel in Pakistan as I know contain less than 5000 ppm sulphur since as far behind as year 2007. I have actual HSD test reports for diesel fuel supplied by PSO to in 2007 which contained 3700ppm sulphur even in 2007.
4. In Jordan Diesel specs are >5,000ppm sulphur. If your analogy is correct that for diesel sulhpur above 500 ppm oil should be changed at 2500kms then in Jordan Toyota should advise changing oil after every 250kms. But this is not correct. Even in Jordan or other countries where diesel sulphur is even higher than 5000 ppm Toyota recommends 2500kms oil change. For Pakistan Toyota's guidelines of changing oil at 2500 kms are misleading and are designed to provide extra business to 3S stealerships. In my personal opinion any good oil having TBN>10 can be safely used in Diesel engines running in normal conditions on less than 500 ppm sulphur diesel with oil change intervals of 5000kms or more.
5. After market products/additives ought not to be used unless they are from a reputable brand but normally there usage has no financial benefit.

For someone who wants to enjoy this car in cities and doesn't do offroading much..... petrol all the way

Then with due respect. Don't buy an SUV. There are other much better options like Civic, Audi A3 or A4 and if you like 7 seaters may be BR-V. In fortuner there is a 4x2 option with petrol engine. BMW X1 is also a good alternative. These vehicles are more economical, refined and comfortable.
In my opinion you will not be able to fully enjoy a Fortuner 4x4 if you don't visit off the beaten path or off road. Cheers,

And for your information, 4x4's always have more maintenance as compared to sedans whether these are petrol or diesel. Nobody here mentioned greasing the propeller shafts on every second oil change or replacing differential fluids and so on

A 4x4 petrol variant would be nice but what to do if it is not being offered. I do like the new stuff that will come with the new Petrol Fortuner which will I think start booking in April.

And please, the look of a car is also something, Honda BRV is not a good looking car, Fortuner ticks the right boxes for me.
The BMW X1 was also a very good choice as per my budget. However with that option gone, the Fortuner is what I am left with.
The Q2 is very small, and the Q3 is out of my budget.

Mental Tension after booking the BMW X1 from Dewan Motors

Booked the X1 from them in August of 2017. Car was supposed to be delivered within 7 months. According to the VIN number provided by them the car was out of production and ready in October 2017. We kept asking them for shipment details, or any detail for that matter but they had no information. On the 9th of March they inform us that the car is delayed. Delayed for 3 more months! After keeping our 4 million, they inform us 1 day before the actual delivery that the car is delayed. We knew they …

If oil changes are at 5000kms then what else is a hassle as compared to petrol engine.

Fuel filter? what about spark plugs and throttle body service etc.

Also I suspect petrol fortuner has a tank mounted fuel filter which is always a big hassle whenever needs to be changed after 80,000 or so as compared to diesel filter which is very easy to change. Diesel filter does not need to be changed at 15 or 20000kms in Diesel Fortuner. It is condition based and if you are using good quality diesel it may run good upto 50000 or even more. That is from personal experience on Vigo.

As everyone has put so much effort in comparison of diesel quality.
What should we do now? Buy it or not?

Truly speaking, I have not had much experience with diesel cars.
The only experience I have had is with a Corolla that I got zero meter.
The sound it makes was insane as well as the weird loud noise from the Air Filter box.
Service every 3000 Km.

Long story short, I myself dont want that hassle.
With that said, I agree with the points you have made. I did not know these things.
I have never kept a 4x4 till now. Never went for Revo because it was diesel.
Need to do some more research. Thank you!! I will consider the diesel option as well.

Yes you might be right about stealership also the oil that Toyota pak puts in is a mineral oil and not fully synthetic
