The 1st Generation Lexus RX was introduced in 1997. The 1997 Lexus RX is a front engine front/four wheel drive mid-size luxury SUV. The Lexus RX 1st Generation is also known as the Toyota Harrier in the Japanese market. The Lexus RX 1997 has been the best-selling SUV since its launch in the United States. In the year 2000 the Lexus RX Series received a facelift that included a series of minor cosmetic changes and upgrades. Production of the 1st Generation Lexus RX lasted for 7 years, the Lexus RX was available to purchase in the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and the year 2003. The 1997 Lexus RX was available in just one variant Lexus RX300. The price of the Lexus RX 1997 was not competitive when compared to other models in the same class.

The exterior of the 1st Generation Lexus RX features a fairly restrained and minimalistic design language. The front end houses sharp side swept headlights, a trapezium shaped chrome grille, and an outward sticking bumper. The rear end houses trapezium styled side swept taillights with circular inserts, a chrome trim pieces running the length of the tailgate, the rear windscreen wiper, an outward sticking bumper and a standard case tailgate. The facelift variant of the Lexus RX features slightly revised larger sharp side swept headlights and a large front bumper. The rear end houses clear taillights with circular inserts and a larger rear bumper. The overall exterior of the 1997 Lexus RX features a fairly restrained and minimalistic design language that is familiar for a Japanese SUV released in the late nineties. Options include High-intensity discharge headlights.

The interior of the 1997 Lexus RX features the use of gray plastic trim pieces with wood paneling. The front and rear seats are covered in fabric.
