The 1st Generation Toyota Surf was introduced in 1995. The 1995 Toyota Surf is a front engine front wheel drive mid-size Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Toyota Surf 1st Generation is based underneath on the Toyota Hilux pickup truck.  Production of the 1st Generation Toyota Surf lasted for 8 years and Toyota halted the production in 2002. The Toyota Surf was available in 2 different variants SSR-X and SSR-G. The price of the Toyota Surf was competitive when compared with other cars in the same class available in the local market.

The exterior of the Toyota Surf 1st Generation features a fairly restrained and minimalistic design language. The front end houses rectangular style side swept headlights, a large rectangular chrome grille, a large bumper and dual air intakes. The rear end houses stacked vertical rectangular style side swept taillights, the spare wheel and a swing-out hinged door.  Toyota Surf SSR-G comes with additional 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear fog lights, rear spoons and immobilizer. All variants of the Toyota Surf feature identical styling in every aspect. The overall exterior of the  Toyota Surf (1995-2002) features familiar styling for a Japanese mid-size SUV that was launched in the mid-nineties.

The interior of the Toyota Surf (1995-2002) features the use of black plastic trim pieces. The front and rear seats are covered in fabric. Standard features include power steering, power lock doors, a stereo speaker audio system, air conditioning, and a tachometer. Features on the higher end SSR-X include power windows. Features on the higher end SSR-G include leather upholstery and a sunroof. Options include climate control, satellite navigation and front electric and heated seats. The overall interior of the 1st Generation Toyota Surf features a good amount of interior space for an SUV of its exterior dimensions and offers a decent level of comfort and refinement.
