The exterior of the 1st Generation Mercedes CLK features a fairly restrained and minimalistic design language. The front end houses quad circular headlights, a large rectangular grille with chrome accents and a trapezium air intake. The rear end houses angular side swept taillights and an outward sticking bumper. The exterior on the more sportier versions of the CLK especially the CLK 55 AMG variant includes flared wheel arches, a widened front bumper with a larger air intake a front splitter and a rear diffuser.

The interior of the 1997 Mercedes CLK features the use of beige plastic trim pieces. The front and rear seats are covered in leather. Standard features include power and heated door mirrors, automatic climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, 8-speaker stereo audio system, traction control, stability control and electric front seats. Options on the higher end CLK 430 and CLK 55 AMG version include a power moonroof, cell phone, satellite navigation, headlight cleaning system, rain sensing windscreen wipers, rear automatic window blind, leather/ wood steering wheel and heated front seats.
