The 4th Generation BMW 3 Series was introduced in 1998. The 4th Generation E46 BMW 3 Series is a front engine rear wheel drive sedan. The 3 Series featured an updated design language that ditched the boxy design of the old E36 3rd Generation BMW 3 Series. The 4th Generation BMW 3 Series was available in 10 models 316i, 318i, 318d, 320d, 320i, 325i, 328i, 320d, 330i, 330d and M3. The 4th Generation BMW 3-Series was also available in 3 body styles 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible and 4-door saloon. Production of the BMW 3 Series 4th Generation lasted for seven years. The BMW 3 Series was available to purchase during the years 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and the year 2005. The BMW 3 Series is available in one variant. The price of the BMW 3 Series 4th Generation was not competitive when compared to other models in the same class.
Exterior
The exterior of the 4th Generation 3 Series features a familiar BMW design language. The front end houses sleek narrow side swept headlights, the classic BMW kidney grille, and standard circular fog lights. The rear end houses trapezium styled side swept headlights and a large rear bumper. The overall exterior of the 4th Generation 3 Series is proportioned and features slightly restrained styling. The 4-door saloon features identical styling to the 2-door coupe apart from being slightly longer to accommodate the rear doors. The 2-door convertible features identical styling to the coupe apart from featuring a power foldable cloth roof. The BMW M3 featured slightly more aggressive styling. The front and houses a larger front bumper with a trapezium air intake flanked by dual circular fog lights. The sides featured flared wheel arches and M3 wheels. The rear end houses a lip spoiler and a sports exhaust system. The overall exterior of the BMW 3 Series features a fairly unique design language that allows it to stand out amongst its rivals.
Interior
The interior of the 4th Generation BMW 3 Series compromises the use of black plastic trim pieces. The front and rear seats are covered in black fabric. Standard features include power door mirrors, air conditioning, power windows, power steering, stereo speaker audio system and traction control.
Options include a power moonroof, cruise control, automatic climate control, keyless entry, cell phone, satellite navigation, CD player, trip computer, outside temperature display, rear side-impact airbag, leather steering wheel and shift knob, leather upholstery and electric heated front seats. The overall interior of the 4th Generation BMW 3 Series features a decent amount of interior space in the front but a lack of interior space in the rear especially in the 2-door convertible and 2-door coupe, it offers a good level of comfort and interior refinement.
