Porsche Boxster Overview

The Porsche Boxster is a two-seater sports car with a mid-engine layout, marking Porsche's first roadster since the 914. The first-generation Boxster (986) launched in late 1996 with a 2.5-liter flat-six engine, inspired by the 1993 Boxster Concept. In 2000, the base model was upgraded to a 2.7-liter engine, and the Boxster S was introduced with a 3.2-liter engine, both receiving updates in 2003.

The 986 Boxster was first produced in 1996 at Porsche's former 928 factory in Stuttgart, Germany, with additional units built by Valmet Automotive in Finland. It was Porsche's best-selling model until 2003, when the Cayenne SUV took the lead. Production moved to a new facility in Osnabrück, Germany, in September 2012.

The Boxster has four generations, identified by the internal designations 986, 987.1, 981, and 982.

Porsche Boxster Specifications

The Porsche 718 Boxster offers four distinct engine options. The base model features a 300-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine. The Boxster S is equipped with a more robust 350-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four engine. The GTS 4.0 boasts a powerful 394-hp 4.0-liter flat-six engine, while the Spyder RS delivers the highest performance with a 493-hp 4.0-liter flat-six engine. All models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission is available for those seeking smoother gear shifts.

Even the base and S models of the Boxster are incredibly enjoyable to drive and deliver impressive performance. The handling and steering of the Boxster rank among the best in the world. It feels exceptionally balanced and stable in corners, and its steering is highly responsive, reacting swiftly to even the slightest adjustments.

In summary, the car provides a robust connection to the road while remaining comfortable for long journeys. Features such as adaptive dampers and an optional rear differential enhance the Boxster's handling, yet even the base models offer precision and an enjoyable driving experience.

Regarding acceleration, the latest Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 equipped with the PDK transmission can reach 60 mph in an impressive 3.4 seconds. With the Sports Chrono Package, it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is 182 mph (286 km/h). An earlier model with a manual transmission was only slightly slower, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Boxster S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds.

The Spyder RS equipped with the PDK transmission was surprisingly fast, accelerating to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. Even the Boxster T, featuring a six-speed manual transmission, reached 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, demonstrating that even the base 300-hp model is impressively quick, with a top track speed of 171 mph (275 km/h).

Porsche Boxster Interior

The interior of the Porsche 718 Boxster features more hard plastic than one might anticipate in a vehicle at this price point. However, buyers have the option to upgrade nearly every surface, including the console lid, door panel trim, and the top of the instrument cluster, with leather at a relatively reasonable cost.

The Boxster features two dash-mounted pop-out cupholders; however, they are not very sturdy and are not particularly useful. This design choice reflects a cultural difference, as Germans typically do not drink their afternoon coffee while driving.

If you are seeking ample storage space, the Boxster may not be the ideal choice for you. This two-seater offers limited storage capacity. However, while the Boxster and Cayman are not renowned for their extensive storage options, they do provide a degree of practicality. The rear cargo area can accommodate a small carry-on suitcase, and the front trunk (often referred to as the two additional bags, offering just enough space for a short getaway.

Porsche Boxster Exterior

The Porsche Boxster boasts a modern and sporty design that seamlessly blends elegance with performance. At the front, the car displays Porsche's iconic angular headlights and a wide, aggressive grille that serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, enhancing airflow for engine cooling.

The car's wide stance and low profile highlight its sporty character. The large side air intakes not only help cool the engine but also enhance the Boxster's dynamic appearance. The rear features a black trim bar that connects the two sleek taillights, providing the car with a cohesive and modern look.

In addition, its soft-top roof can be smoothly retracted to provide an open-air driving experience, enhancing its allure as a convertible roadster. The SportDesign mirrors on the sides, inspired by the GT3, signify the Boxster's identity as a high-performance sports car. Customization options, including vibrant colors such as Miami Blue and Chalk, enable owners to make their Boxster truly distinctive.

Infotainment

The Porsche 718 Boxster is equipped with two USB ports, which is adequate for its two-seat capacity. A standard CD player is included for those who prefer physical media. Buyers also have the option to add navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot. While Apple CarPlay comes standard, Android Auto is not available.

Porsche Boxster Safety Features

The Porsche 718 Boxster has a range of safety features, including front, side-impact, and side-curtain airbags for complete protection. It also has front and rear parking sensors to assist with parking and a Porsche Stability Management system with traction control to maintain stability.

The car also includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic brake Force Distribution (EBD), and Hill Start Assist to improve braking and prevent rolling on inclines. Blind Spot Monitoring and Lane Departure Warning help with safe lane changes. An Emergency Brake Assist provides extra braking force in emergencies. These features work together to ensure a safe driving experience.
