The 1st Generation BMW X5 was introduced in 1999. The 1999 X5 is a front engine four wheel drive SUV. The BMW X5 1st Generation was devolved during the time BMW owned Land Rover and was able to apply Land Rover technology such as the Hill decent control and off-road engine management to their SUV. The X5 was the first SUV introduced by BMW. The 1st Generation X5 is available in 5 variants 3.0i, 4.4i, 4.6i 4.8i and 3.0d. The BMW X5 received a facelift in 2004 that introduced a series of minor cosmetic upgrades. Production of the 1st Generation BMW X5 lasted for 7 years, the BMW X5 was available to purchase in the year 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and the year 2006. The exterior of the 1st Generation BMW X5 features a familiar nineties BMW design language. The front end houses sleek narrow side swept headlights, the classic BMW kidney grille, dual air intakes and standard circular fog lights. The rear end houses trapezium styled side swept taillights and a standard case hatchback. The facelift variant of the BMW X5 featured a series of cosmetic upgrades such as new headlights, chrome accents and new larger standard wheel. All variants of the BMW X5 feature identical styling in every aspect. The overall exterior of the 1st Generation BMW X5 features a fairly finalist design language that was still instantly recognizable as a BMW.

The interior of the 1st Generation BMW X5 compromises of black plastic trim pieces. The front and rear seats are covered in fabric. Standard features on the 3.0i and 3.0d include power heated door mirrors, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, multifunction steering wheel, 8-way power front seats with memory function, 10-speaker stereo audio system, traction control and stability control. Features on the 4.4i variant include auto-dimming rearview mirror, rear HVAC, a reversing camera and leather upholstery. Features on the highest end 4.8i includes auto leveling suspension, larger front and rear tires, heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, rear side impact airbags, 12-speaker stereo audio system as standard, headlights cleaning system as standard and power moonroof as standard. Options include auto-dimming door mirrors, power moonroof, heated steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, satellite navigation, 12-speaker stereo audio system, reversing camera, headlight cleaning system, rear side impact airbags, leather upholstery, heated front seats and heated rear seats. The overall interior of the 1999 BMW X5 features a lack of interior space for a SUV of its exterior dimensions, it also offers a decent level of comfort and interior refinement.
