The 2nd Generation BMW X5 was introduced in 2006. The X5 featured an updated design language and series of upgrades compared to the 1st Generation BMW X5. The X5 was the flagship vehicle of the X-Series SUV lineup from BMW. The 2nd Generation BMW X5 comes in 7 models xDrive30i, xDrive35i, xDrive48i, xDrive50i, xDrive30d, xDrive40d and X5M. The BMW X5 2006 introduced the iDrive system first seen on the BMW 7 Series as standard and later offered a variant which featured 7-seats in the form of 3 rows.  a Production of the BMW X5 2006 lasted for 12 years. The BMW X5 was available to purchase in the years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and the year 2015. The Price of the BMW X5 2nd Generation was not competitive when compared with other models in the same class.

The exterior of the 2nd Generation BMW X5 features a very distinctive design language. The front end houses sleek angular side swept headlights, the classic BMW kidney grille and triple air intakes. The rear end houses trapezium shaped side swept headlights, dual exhaust tips and a standard case tailgate. The X5M featured a slightly different and more aggressive design language. The front end houses a larger front bumper with a larger trapezium air intake and a front diffuser. The rear end houses a sports exhaust system, a larger rear bumper with a rear diffuser and various M badging all around the SUV. All other variants of the BMW X5 feature identical styling in every aspect. The overall exterior of the X5 deploys the familiar BMW design language in a unique manner. As a result it can differentiate itself from its rivals.

The interior of the 2nd Generation BMW X5 compromises of black and beige plastic trim pieces with aluminum paneling. The front and rear seats are covered in a choice of beige, black, grey or sand beige leather. Standard features on the xDrive30i, xDrive35i, xDrive30d and xDrive40d, includes automatic climate control, heated and power door mirrors, iDrive, cruise control, multifunction steering wheel, 8-way power and heated front seats, keyless entry, 10-speaker stereo audio system, rain sensing windscreen wipers, electronic stability control and traction control. Features on the higher end X5M, xDrive48i and xDrive50i include memory seats as standard rear HVAC as standard, satellite navigation as standard, power moonroof as standard and heated front seats as standard. Options include Auto-dimming door mirrors, power tailgate, radar cruise control, power moonroof, rear HVAC, satellite navigation, rear seat entertainment system, wood trim, 16-speaker stereo audio system, headlight cleaning system, heads up display, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, carbon fibre interior trim (X5M only)  and a 3rd row of seats (7 total). The overall interior of the BMW X5 features a decent amount of space in the front but an average interior space in the rear for an SUV of its size and mass, it also offers a good level of comfort and interior refinement.
