The 3rd generation Honda City was introduced in 1996. The 3rd Generation Honda City is a front engine front wheel drive sedan. The car was based on the same platform that underpinned the 4th Generation Honda Civic. The 3rd generation Honda City was introduced to be subcompact car that would slot in underneath the Honda Civic. The car was available in two different variants EXi and EXi-S. Production of the Honda City 1997 lasted for 5 years. The Honda City was available to purchase during the years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and the year 2001. The price of the 3rd Generation Honda City was fairly competitive when compared to other models in the same class.

The general shape of the exterior of the 3rd generation Honda City is that of a typical sedan. The front fascia features side swept trapezium shaped headlights, a standard rectangular styled grille along with a three-piece bumper. The rear features the use of angular side swept trapezium shaped taillights, a chrome strip running across the trunk lid and a three-piece rear bumper. The overall exterior of the 3rd generation Honda City is very restrained and minimalistic.
