The Nissan Sentra is a car series made by the Japanese company Nissan since 1982. Initially, it was a small car (subcompact), but since 1999, it has been considered a compact car. The Sentra was basically the exported version of the Japanese Nissan Sunny until 2006 when it became the exported version of another Nissan car called the Sylphy.
Interestingly, the Sentra name is not used in Japan. In many Latin American countries, the Sunny is sold under the Sentra name. In Mexico, the first three generations of the Sentra were called the Nissan Tsuru (which means "crane" in Japanese). The B13 model was sold as the Tsuru until 2017, even after newer Sentra models were introduced.
There are a total of eight generations of Nissan Sentra with different code names, i.e. B11, B12, B13, B14, B15, B16, B17, and B18. It is currently in its eighth generation and is still in production.
What's New For 2025?
The Sentra remains the same as last year's model, with just two updates. The SV trim now comes with NissanConnect, which includes app integration and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Additionally, to stay competitive, Nissan is now offering up to three free oil changes within the first two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.
Nissan Sentra Specifications
The Sentra features a 149-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive. Although the CVT is intended to mimic the feel of a traditional automatic transmission, the Sentra we tested was noisy and sluggish, particularly when attempting to overtake vehicles on the highway. Additionally, driving the Sentra lacks excitement. While the steering is stable and predictable, it feels less responsive compared to competitors such as the Honda Civic and Mazda3.
The vehicle is available in three different trims: S FWD, SV FWD, and SR FWD. The Sentra features an independent rear suspension, and its wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches. The model we tested was equipped with the largest 18-inch wheels, which resulted in a firmer ride and increased road noise.
Even so, the Sentra is sufficiently comfortable for both everyday driving and road trips. One standout feature is the braking system, which feels robust and brings the car to a quick stop. It took 170 feet to come to a complete stop from 70 mph, which is competitive within its class.
