All you need to know about Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

You must have heard about a new braking technology in vehicles known as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB). In Pakistan, we do not even get cars with ABS while the World has moved to AEB. It will take many years for this technology to step into Pakistan and make the roads fair enough for its working.

As the name suggests, AEB is a car safety feature that helps during emergency braking. This system alerts the driver if an accident is about to occur and allows the driver to apply brakes to the maximum capacity. The system steps in if there is no response from the driver or the response is inadequate and applies the brake to prevent the accident or at least reduce its severity and impact. So this system proves to be a lifesaver in case an accident is about to occur.

Below are explained different categories of this braking system. Some cars may have one or all of them to provide the best protection. AEB mainly falls into three categories:

Low-speed system

The low-speed system works pretty well on local streets where vehicles run at low speeds. This system detects other vehicles moving on the street, in front of your car and takes action before the distance gets dangerously close. It is best for preventing minor crashes and saving passengers and drivers from minor injuries.

Pedestrian system

The pedestrian system detects the movement of pedestrians with the help of a camera and radar and estimates whether the pedestrian is in danger of being struck by the car. By doing so, it calculates the risk of collision and warns the driver if something serious is about to happen.

High-Speed System

This type of AEB is best for the highways where vehicles run at very high speeds. It uses a long-range radar that can monitor up to 200 meters in front of the vehicle to detect any possible danger.

It is important to note that this system is only designed to assist the driver in emergency situations, and if something hazardous happens, the responsibility would be on the driver, not on the Auto manufacturer.

Having AEB in your car can significantly reduce the number of road accidents and injuries. Studies have shown that AEB reduces the rate of fatal crashes and subsequent injuries. A 2013 Schittenhelm study claims that AEB prevents 35% of rear-end crashes. The same study has also found that it can reduce the severity of rear-end accidents by 53%, which is quite impressive.
