Toyota Sequoia Overview

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV made by Toyota for the North American market. It was first introduced in 2000 for the 2001 model year and is based on the Tundra pickup truck. It is Toyota's second-largest SUV after the Mega Cruiser, which is a military vehicle sold only in Japan.

There are a total of three generations of Sequoia with different code names, i.e., XK30/XK40, XK60, and XK80. Its current and latest third generation is available in five trims: SR5, Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro, as well as the flagship Capstone luxury-oriented trim. These trims are available in either seven or eight-passenger seating with a split bench or dual captain chairs in the second row.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica, and it is only available in left-hand drive. It is named after the Giant Sequoia, a tall redwood tree found in California.

What's New For 2025?

For 2025, the Toyota Sequoia introduces the 1794 trim level, inspired by the Tundra pickup. It is positioned above the Platinum trim but below the Capston trim. The 1794 trim features a brown leather interior, walnut woodgrain accents, Texas-themed badges, a panoramic sunroof, second-row captain's chairs, and a towing package. It also consists of massaging front seats, which are now standard on the Platinum and Capstone trims. However, the Solar Octane exterior color has been discontinued. A new "Mudbath" color has been added to the TRD Pro trim.

Toyota Sequoia Specifications

The Sequoia consists of an iForce MAX hybrid powertrain, which is optional in the Tundra pickup. This system combines a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor to deliver a total of 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. It uses the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the Tundra. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while four-wheel drive is available on most trims and standard on the off-road-focused TRD Pro model.

The TRD Pro includes off-road upgrades like Fox dampers, a front skid plate, a locking rear differential, and forged 18-inch wheels with 33-inch tyres. Lower trims like the SR5, Limited, and Platinum can be opted for with the TRD Off-Road package, which adds features like hill-descent control, Crawl Control, and a locking rear differential.

In the initial test drive, we found the Sequoia's ride comfortable and the cabin quiet. However, its handling on the road left something to be desired. The SUV feels unusually wide, making it hard to position in a lane, and the light steering doesn't help. The brake pedal also felt soft and unresponsive.

Regarding acceleration, the four-wheel-drive Sequoia Capstone can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and complete the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds at 94 mph. This makes it faster than the last GMC Yukon Denali we tested but slightly slower than the Ford Expedition Timberline. The TRD Off-Road model was a bit slower and hit 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The Toyota Sequoia's towing capacity ranges from 4,073 kg for the four-wheel-drive Capstone to 4,318 kg for the rear-wheel-drive SR5. Even the lower end beats the Chevy Tahoe (3,810 kg), and the maximum towing capacity slightly surpasses the Ford Expedition (4,218 kg).

The Tow Technology package is available, which includes a digital rearview mirror and a Trailer Backup Guide with Straight Path Assist (manual steering, not automated). This package is optional for the SR5 and Limited trims but is standard for higher trims. Additionally, a load-leveling rear suspension is available on the Platinum and Capstone trims to enhance towing stability.

Toyota Sequoia Interior

The Sequoia's interior is extensive and includes a standard third row. It seats eight with a second-row bench or seven with optional captain's chairs. The headroom is tight in the rear rows, especially with the panoramic sunroof. The high floor also reduces legroom for back passengers.

Interior quality depends on the trim level. Lower trims are essential, while higher trims add leather, wood, and chrome details. Top trims offer heated and cooled second-row seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a premium sound system. The 1794 Edition trim adds Western-inspired luxury with Saddle Tan leather upholstery and walnut woodgrain accents.

In the TRD Pro trim, the third-row seats are covered in durable SofTex® material for a premium feel. They can slide, recline with the push of a button, and fold down for extra cargo space. The seats also have adjustable headrests for reliable comfort and safety.

The Capstone trim comprises semi-aniline trimmed seats with premium contrast stitching and 10-way power-adjustable front seats.

Cargo space is limited. With the third row up, there's only 12 cubic feet of room. Sliding the third row forward adds space, but folding it down doesn't create a flat floor.

Toyota Sequoia Exterior

The Sequoia's exterior design is bold and modern, with standard LED headlights and a rugged stance. The TRD Pro trim stands out with off-road-focused features like black 18-inch alloy wheels, a front skid plate, and all-terrain tires. Meanwhile, the 1794 Edition highlights its Western theme with chrome accents and 1794 badging.

Higher trims, such as the Capstone, offer premium touches like 22-inch chrome wheels, power-retractable running boards, and an exclusive grille design. The limited trim includes conveniences like available captain chairs and the Nightshade Package. In addition, auto-leveling LED headlights are standard on Platinum trims.

The overall design reflects a balance between toughness and refinement that caters to a variety of lifestyles, from rugged adventurers to luxury seekers.

Infotainment

The outdated touchscreen in the old Sequoia has been replaced with a modern 14.0-inch display, similar to the one in the Tundra. This large screen is standard on all trims except the base SR5 and runs Toyota's latest infotainment system. It supports smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and various music streaming options for enhanced connectivity.

Toyota Sequoia Safety Features

The Toyota Sequoia is equipped with several standard safety features to ensure the protection of passengers.

The Sequoia includes Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control, which help maintain stability and prevent skidding in challenging driving conditions. Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) provide enhanced braking performance and control.

For occupant protection, the Sequoia features front-side torso airbags and roll-sensing side curtain airbags that cover all three rows, offering comprehensive safety in the event of a collision. These standard features make the Sequoia a reliable choice for family and passenger safety.
