On Monday, the Sindh Information, Transport and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon directed the Sindh Mass Transit Authority to launch the Peoples Electric Bus Service (PEBS) promptly in Sindh. The minister also ordered the Mass Transit Authority to decide the new routes of the PEBS in Karachi.
The minister chaired a session regarding the electric bus service on Monday. The participants discussed the routes of the buses and the procurement of new buses. Memon informed them that the provincial government had approved the procurement of new buses in its last cabinet meeting. He intended to accelerate the whole procedure based on the public’s demand to add new routes to the bus service.
The session concluded by finalizing the first route of the Peoples Electric Bus Service. According to the minister, the People’s Bus Service has been gaining popularity among the community for its comfortable ride and budget-friendly prices. As a result of its success, citizens have been calling for the expansion of its services to new routes. The company’s management is reportedly considering the demand and exploring options to expand its operations in response to public demand.
The Peoples Electric Bus Service
The test drives of the Peoples Electric Bus Service (PEBS) had started back in November 2022. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon had tweeted regarding the news stating:
“Announcement: Transport department government of Sindh is going to start New Bus service in Karachi.”
The tweet further read:
“These are Pakistan’s first electrical vehicles which are completely environment friendly. From tomorrow we are going to start the test drive in the city.”
Later on, Senator Saeed Ghani also joined in by sharing pictures of the test drive day.
Electric vehicles have been taking over the world, and seeing progress regarding EVs for public transport is surely a step towards a greener Pakistan.
